London Phone Books via Ancestry...

1927 to 1937, J Krakofsky, Ladies Tailor, 37 Fairclough Street, E1
1937 to 1940, J Krakofsky, Ladies Tailor, 23 Stamford Hill, N16
1940 to 1945, J Krakofsky, Ladies Tailor, 80 Cazenove Road, N16

Then no more after that... name change???

Joseph was an accoutant, his father Barnet was a walking stick/umbrella maker.
Hope this will be some help.
Thanks very much.

Hi

Here's one more from National Archives

Home Office: Registered Papers, Supplementary HO 144/12813
Nationality and Naturalization: Krakofsky (or Kracofski), Herschl (or Harry Barnett), from Russia. Resident in London. Certificate 18890 issued 29 October 1930. from Date: 1930.

deb :)

Hi,
I believe Joseph had a brother Harry so possibly the same......
Russia, Germany or Poland I find it very confusing I've browsed many internet sites, then realise when the immigration officials at the time noted so many from Warsaw, it was easier to mark Warsaw due to the communication difficulty apparently.
Thanks

i hope so!

added - of course the speeling you have is the englih verison - you would need to get it translated into the Polish spelling before searching the polish documents or it will draw a blank. :)

I"ll try and  translate my details but I'm worried that I won't understand the replies even with google translator, the translation isn't always exact. Do you know any other ways of simplyfying this?
Thanks,
Ladylil

Hi Ladylil

Sorry, didn't explain myself well, I thought this could be Jacob, and wondered if it was significant that he stops appearing in the phone book the same year as Joseph changed his name?

Warsaw = Warszawa

possibly Krakowska

now if the person concerend was male the name would in in (phoentic) Ski
however if the person was female the name would end in (phoentic) Scar

i ave signed up to mylaungeexchange.com to try to help with my research as its helpful if you can read the langauge
My nan also has a English / Ukraine dictionary

i see babelfish doesnt give Polish but the next best thing would be Russian

and Yossel (probably the equivalant to Joseph ) (translation deletd as incorrect)

try poltran.com

although the names do not seem to be recognised probably because they have been anglicised
