Roadblock! Help..suggestions...
« on: Tuesday 20 January 09 00:30 GMT (UK) »
My 3rd great grandmother Kathleen (Kate) Moffit was born in Scotland (unknown where) January 19, 1844. I've searched the births on Scotland's People and find nothing.  I've also searched the BMD for England (just in case someone was wrong). She did marry an Englishman and I have their Marriage info and will be sending for their certificate.

Any suggestion on where to go to find her birth certificate? Supposedly her father "Sir" John Moffit disowned her and left her a shilling in his will (because she married an Englishman/boot-maker) and moved to the U.S. in 1863.

Hi Charlene

There is nothing on the 1851 Scottish census that fits her profile but I note from the submitted IGI record that she was Kathleen Ellen

It may be best to wait until her marriage cert arrives to confirm her fathers name and occupation
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Charlene,
What is your source for Kate's dob?

Considering that we can't find birth on SP, it is very specific.

Is it simply from the IGI entry that Carole mentions?

What other info can you add?  Have you found travel from UK to US?  Who did she travel with?  Husbands name?  Married in UK?  Is Sir J rumour or fact? etc

Sorry, I can be a bit slow and need things spelled out.

The source was my grandmother but also from church records in the U.S. of her death. I don't have any definite proof of WHERE she was born, though.
The census in the U.S. says she was born in England but that may be because she was living there when she left.

What is the IGI record?

IGI - International Genealogical Index
LDS site - Latter Day Saints
www.familysearch.org

I assumed that was where you / CaroleW got info?

Info there, particularly 'submitted' records, can be unreliable.

Have you seen this, Charlene?

http://genealogy.clanmoffat.org/getperson.php?personID=I28981&tree=ClanMoffat#cite1

I have searched using various metasearch engines and I can't find a reference to a Scotish Sir John Moffit/Moffat. The only one who pops up, was born in NZ. Maybe the 'Sir' was a touch of sarcasm seeing that he left her a shilling.  ???
