Magills of Armagh - help required
« on: Thursday 10 February 05 13:55 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find out information relating to my great-grandfather, John Magill, born 24/09/1875. The only detail I have is a reference from his employer, the Rev Robert J Patterson, of The Mall Presbyterian Church, Armagh, listing both John and his father James who both worked at The Manse. James is quoted as coming from Tower Hill, Armagh.

I know John married Elizabeth Scott, dob 06/06/1879, and they moved to England in the early 1900's. Would somebody be so kind as to look for their entries in the 1901 census at either the Tower Hill or Manse addresses, or to corroborate these details in any other way?

Thanks
Rob

In the Henderson 1856 directory of Ulster there are 65 Magills but the only one from County Armagh appears to be a Miss Magill of melbourne Terrace who is listed under gentry.  There are lots of James in various towns of Ulster.
But of course in 1856 your James was probablly a child if born so my directory is likely to list John's grandfather!
Do you have a any idea of James' occupation?  someone with a lter directory might be able to find him for you with an occupation eg from John's marriage certificate.

1856 list J R McAllister as Rev of the church you mentioned.

Have you purchased a copy of your great grandfather's birth certificate at all? If not, this should be possible and give you his mum's name [you already know his father's] and their address at that time.

Thanks for all replies!

As far as the birth cert goes, I only have John's DOB and his father's name to go on. Would this be enough for me to get the birth cert?

John's marriage cert (1901) gives his address as Mullinure. This doesn't mean that he was born there, of course...

I've also just found out that a family member died intestate in the late 1980's or early 1990's. Her name was Anita Cathcart. I would really like to get hold of a copy of the will. Any suggestions please?

Thanks in advance

Rob

If you want an actual copy certificate, with the details you have you could order it via GRONI or the local Registrars Office in Armagh (details on GRONI site) for about £11.00 or, if you are not too bothered about an actual copy certificate, you could use  this site and, as you have a name, county and date of birth, go for the £3.50 certificate details option. I have used this myself several times in the past and found the service to be good. If you have any doubt about the dob, you could pay £1 for an index search first (again, I have done this too on some occasions).

Perhaps someone else could make a suggestion re wills or you could try looking at the PRONI website, although I would guess that for the date in question, it may not yet be possible to view records (ie less than 30 years ago).

Hi Rob,

Or you can order the photocopy of the birth cert from the Irish GRO for only 6 euros.

Here is the website: www.groireland.ie

You would have to fill out the application stating his birth date and his name in Co Antrim. Leave the parental details blank because if you do, they probably find the birth entry with the date of birth you quoted but his father's name is not what you list--the result is you will get a no record found certificate and charge you 4 euros!

I am sure you will get his birth entry.

Best wishes,

Tees

PS By the way, do you mean that your g grandfather was married in the year of 1897?? I hope so as it would make a lot of sense to me, not 1879 which means he was only 4 years old!  ;D

Hi Rob,

I was wondering if you got any further with tracing your Magill ancestry? I think we are related as my great grandfather was John Magill and James Scott Magill was my grandad. It's really weird that I came across your posts today as I have been trying to trace the Magill family for my neice who has become very curious over her ancestry. Unfortunately I got stuck at my grandad as I wasn't sure if he was born in 1903 or 1904 and can't seem to find his birth certificate on any of the geneology websites.

Warm regards

Jane
