I should also say that my grandmother was known as Mary Ellen even though her name was Mary Helen. It gets very confusing!

Th emoderator took your email address out so I can't contact you directly. I am still in contact with my Uncle Hec and a few of my grandmothers nieces but they are all quite reluctant to talk about the past. I recently found out that there were 8 children altogether in my grandmothers family two of whom died very young. They are all passed now though. There was James, 2 Alexanders, William, Elizabeth, Mary Helen, Rosie and one other who I can't find anything about apart from I know that they existed!

Hi. I am new to Rootschat and am unsure how it works. Does anyone have any more info on Catherine Bruce/John Alexander Gatt? They moved to Australia in 1940's(?), settling in Adelaide.

Welcome to RootsChat, Aussielam.

How it works is that people who are familiar with the Scottish records can point you at the sources where you can find out more.

John Gatt and Catherine Bruce were married in 1922 in Rathven. Rathven is the district in the historic county of Banffshire which includes Buckie. Mary Helen Bruce Gatt, mother's surname Bruce, was born in Rathven in 1926.

Go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, invest in a few credits and use some of them to view the marriage certificate. This will tell you the ages and full names of both sets of parents including their mothers' maiden surnames.

Then you can use that information to find John's and Catherine's birth certificates, whch will tell you the dates and places of their parents' marriage. And so on until you get back to 1855.

Before 1855 there are no civil records, but most of the church baptism and marriage registers can also be viewed at Scotland's People. Note that SP is pay-per-view and there is no subscription option, but a view costs less than a cup of coffee.

If you have any problems ask again and someone here will try to help.

Happy hunting!
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
