Help with local newspapers
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 23:18 GMT (UK) »
Please could anyone tell me which local newspapers covered New Mills in Derbyshire or Knutsford in Cheshire in 1959?
I am trying to find an obituary or an article regarding a fatal car accident on Mere Road in Cheshire.
thanks

I cannot help at all with New Mills.

However the local paper likely to have covered Mere (Cheshire) in 1959 and certainly a fatal accident is the Altrincham, Sale and Bowdon Guardian.  The paper is no longer published but copies almost certainly will be held by the Trafford Local Studies Centre in Sale.  Do you have a more precise date for the event?

I think that the Stockport Advertiser covered New Mills as well as a large swathe of NE Cheshire and Derbyshire. I remember reading it when I lived in New MIlls in the mid 1970s.
Hope this helps.

Thankyou both for  your replies.
Yes Reiver I do have an accurate date of death.
It was 30/10/1959.  I believe it to be the same date as the accident.

I will  try the Stockport Advertiser, thanks Nell

The distance between Mere and New Mills is some 23 miles.  Would New Mills be where you expect the person in the accident to have come from?

Altrincham is only 6 miles - and I suppose is the nearest town.

In case it is helpful  :)

Hi Reiver,
yes New Mills is the last address of the deceased, he lived with his parents who were landlord's of The Liberal Club at the time. The Club has now gone.
The person who died was my father,  and his father died some weeks later.
I was born within weeks of both deaths  so am desperate to find any information  for my family records. I do not live in the area  so progress is hard going, although roots chat has been a great help.

the Altrincham, Sale and Bowdon Guardian

If my memory serves me right, I think there was a Knutsford edition too, which might be more appropriate.

In 1959, pre motorways etc. it was quite a long trek from New Mills to Mere Road, Knutsford.  From Altrincham not too much of a distance and quite a quick journey as there was, even then the A56.

thanks Lizzie and Reiver for the information.
I have just  found out that the place of death I gave you is the wrong way round and it should have said,  Chester Road , Mere. Sorry
I wonder if this makes a difference to the local Newspapers?

We used to call the A56 the Chester Road, so it won't make any difference to the newspapers, apart from the fact it would almost certainly be the Altrincham  Sale and Bowdon Guardian.

The A56 was (probably still is) a very wide road but although it was busy as roads went in the 1950s, we still used to ride our cycles along there and into the Cheshire villages.

ps.  Slightly off topic Reiver - Does the demise of the Altrincham Guardian mean there is no longer a local newspaper in the area?  I think I've heard recently that the Manchester Evening News is in dire straits too.
