Missing John Brown
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 18:24 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please help me?  I am looking for a John Brown born between 1893 and 1915 parents were John Brown and Margaret Wilson. I have found siblings in Hamilton Stewarton and Coatbridge.  I know how difficult it is to trace such a common name but any help would be fantastic ???

Hi Angie,

With such a common name, you will need to narrow down your time frame. :-\ For instance, have you got the family in the 1901 census? If so, is John there and what are his details? If born post-1901, any idea what age he was or what the age order of his brothers and sisters were? Anything can help. If he died in Scotland, his death entry will also help with an approximate age.

hume :)

Hi Angie

I have a few John Browns in Hamilton, and there's a Christine Wilson Brown born in 1922, but I've not found where the Wilson came from.

Check out the Brown Genealogy on my website to see if any bells ring.

Needle in a haystack, but I happen to have a John Brown as an in-law.  Have you checked immigration records?  (This information is from Scotland's People and the Ellis Island site.)

My John Brown married Janet Thomson on 17 October 1905.  He was a gardener at Calderwood Castle in East Kilbride and she was a daughter of the estate manager.  Witnesses were James Brown, coalminer and Elizabeth Brown (m.s. Mackie).

Don't have birth on him but Janet was born 1886.  In March 1909 they migrated to the USA on the Columbia out of Glasgow.  Two children:  Margaret 2, and Elizabeth 9 Months.  Destination:  John Brown (father), Dumont, New Jersey, USA.

What info do you have on him? That is quite a large margin for birth years.

When and where did his parents marry?
