Just thought of one other important issue with the Gibbons family and searching the records.

I had the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies do a little bit of research for me and it became apparent that there seems to be two Gibbons families, one came from the Marlow-Wycombe area and the other family from the Hughenden-Naphill-Princes Risborough areas.

To add to this confusion both families were fond of using the same names, Thomas, William, Robert etc.

As far as I'm aware they are to separate families, there could have been a common ancestor at some point but I don't know when.

So it's important to check their places of birth.

Just found this while searching around Some Selected Reports from The Windsor and Eton Express 1842

The parish of Great Marlow has had no guardian in the Wycombe Union since Lady-day last until now. On Friday an election took place, every precaution being previously taken by the proper authorities to prevent every species of undue influence, bribery, and even canvassing. The state of the poll will therefore show how triumphantly Liberal principles would prevail there, if uninfluenced by power, and unawed by menace, intimidation , and bribery. Mr.W.Francis nominated Mr.Charles Susan, who had 267 votes; Mr. William Wright, 207; Mr.John Moss, 191. Mr.Robert Maddocks, the vicar's churchwarden, nominated Mr.Thomas Bell Gibbons, who had 140 votes; Mr.Thomas Rolls, jun., 120; and Mr.James Bird Brooks, 16. Mr.Maddocks contrived to get himself nominated by the parish clerk, but in another persons name; this was discovered, and the candidate being unqualified in other respects, was not allowed to stand the poll. The first three gentlemen were honourably elected; and their attention to the duties of their office in inspecting the state of the workhouse, &c., already shows how well qualified by their energy and discretion they are likely to prove for the duties of the office.

Hi all - I have just picked up this line on rootschat but have already been in contact with several of those on this list. Just to join the throng - I am descended via Robert Wicks GIBBONS b.1809, who was a brother of a John Thomas Gibbons b.1808,a Richard Gibbons and a Charles Gibbons (1811-abt 1876 m.Jane HEATHER).
They were all sons of a John GIBBONS (1783-1861) and Mary Bird WICKS (1779-1820).
John GIBBONS (1783-1861) was a grocer in Great Marlow and he was the son of a Thomas GIBBONS (1744-1824) and Sarah CROCKETT (abt.1749-1810) and whose memorial headstone in All Saints Churchyard in Marlow has been mentioned.
This Thomas (1744-1824) was a ropespinner.
Thomas Gibbonss and Sarah Crockett had 7 children :-
   John (1783 - 1824) m. Mary WICKS - already mentioned
Jane 1784-1785              Thomas b 1784 who married Sarah BELL - already mentioned
another Jane (1788-1794) whose memorial headstone lies beside her parents
 Richard (1791-1809)  Charles (1792-1793) and Elizabeth (1794 - ?)

I have a lot more details of this Marlow Family

I would be interested to find out any information, if you have it, of John Thomas Gibbons + Emma Hatch - in particular their children - Robert, Joseph, Catherine, etc

I know that Catherine was born at Easthampstead Union in 1848 - I believe the family were there after John Thomas Gibbons' bankruptcy in 1844 and before the family emigrated to Australia in 1849.

We found Robert Gibbons (1846) in Victoria, Australia but his death and marriage certs list his parents as John Thomas Gibbons and Eliza Susan unknown; Joseph Gibbons was found in NSW through a death listing (1917) showing his parents as John Thomas and Emma.

I look forward to hearing from you

Hi MJARM
Re Mary Bird Wicks, wife of John Gibbons(1783-1861) grocer of Gt. Marlow:
I was wondering when she died? as looking at John in 1841, he has a wife Catherine, born 1795 in Taplow?

Hi Helen
Mary Bird Wicks (1779-1820) was John Gibbons' first wife.  His second wife was Catherine Howard.

I am researching Thomas Bell Gibbons (born Marlow around 1818).  He married Hannah Robinson (born around 1817 in Hambleden, Bucks).  They emigrated to Australia around 1851.
Any help on how I can get started would be appreciated.

Hi joanscottallen
I have found the baptism of Edith Elizabeth, only daughter of Thomas B. and Hannah. The birth of their first son in Oct 1851 on board the 'Resolute', the death of Thomas B. Gibbons brother aboard the Norfolk, on the voyage to Australia, and Dyfney James also died in Australia, and if you have not already found this information, I would like to share it with you.
Cheers

Hi All, I am also tracing the Gibbons family of Great Marlow. I am a descendant of Thomas and Sarah Gibbons (nee Crockett) of Great Marlow, they married on 28 Aug 1782 and had 7 children. One of their sons Thomas Gibbons (b abt 1786) was my 3xGtGrandfather. Thomas Gibbons jnr. married Sarah Bell at Aylesbury on 16 June 1816. His brother Richard Gibbons, according to 1851 Census was a Brewer employing 5 men and other members of the Gibbons family were brewers and wine merchants also. I am trying to establish whether Richard Gibbons had his own brewery/inn. If so what was it known as and did it become part of the Wethered Brewery. They owned the "Wethered Brewery" which was the major brewery in Great Marlow. The Buckinghamshire Family History Society have a reference to Richard in their "Great Marlow Breweries" articles and the 1847 Poll Book as the owner of "Waterman's Arms". If anyone has any info about the Gibbons family or can point me in the right direction regarding the brewery's it would be appreciated. I have quite a bit of info about Thomas and Hannah (nee Robinson) they came to Australia in Oct 1851 on the ship "Resolute". Gets confusing with everyone having the same name.
Hope to hear from someone :)
