The following is a quote from 'Great Marlow - Parish and People in the 19th Century' by Marten.

St Peter's Street

Relatively few well-to-do families lived in St Peter's Street.  Thomas GIBBONS was a coal merchant and farmer and was living at the top end of the street.  He owned his house and garden, which was rated at £17, and rented an orchard from the Dean and Chapter of Gloucester.  He also owned woodland at Spinfield and rented wharfage from the Alms House Trust.  A man of sixty-four, he was born in Great Marlow; he lived with his wife Sarah, who came from Aylesbury, and his son William who worked as his father's assistant.  On the night of the census they had a visitor, Mary Ann WETHERED, the widow of Charles WETHERED.

The above Thomas GIBBONS was baptised at Great Marlow on 29 June 1786.  He was the son of Thomas GIBBONS and Sarah CROCKETT who had married at Great Marlow on 29 Aug 1782.  The younger Thomas had married Sarah BELL at Aylesbury on 16 June 1816.  Mary Ann WETHERED, visitor in the GIBBONS household in 1851, was Sarah's sister who had married Charles WETHERED at Aylesbury on 13 Oct 1807.  Charles was a member of the WETHERED brewing family of Great Marlow.

Thomas GIBBONS and Sarah (nee CROCKETT) had several other children baptised (and buried) at Great Marlow:

18 Sep 1783  John
3 Dec 1784   Jane (she was buried 30 May 1785)
14 Feb 1788  Jane (she was buried 22 Apr 1794, aged 6)
10 Feb 1791  Richard
6 Sep 1792  Charles (he was buried 24 May 1793)
3 Jul 1794  Elizabeth

Two of these are referred to in the book mentioned above:

Further down St Peter's Street, probably on the west side on the corner with Church Passage, lived Richard GIBBONS, who was the town's other brewer.  He was probably the younger brother of Thomas, the coal merchant, and John, the grocer and wine merchant in West Street.  His two elder sons were in their father's business as brewer'as assistants but Alfred, the youngest son, is described as a wine merchan't assistant and may have been working elsewhere, perhaps for his uncle.  Mrs GIBBONS and two daughters completed the family and they had a sixteen-year-old house servant.

In contrast the rest of the street housed several coal porters, who may have worked for Thomas GIBBONS, and at least twelve agricultural labourers.

West Street

John GIBBONS was a grocer and tallow chandler living quite near the Market Square end of West Street.  He was sixty-six and employed three man.  He lived with his wife, two sons, a daughter and one servant in what was probably a substantial house valued at £35.

Although not mentioned in the above book, Sydney GIBBONS is still in Great Marlow in 1851.  He is aged 21, unmarried, described as a farmer and living at Seymours Farm.

Just as a matter of interest 'Great Marlow - Parish and People in the 19th Century' was published by Marten in 1991 and reprinted, with corrections, in 1992.  It is now out of print.

Great Marlow Parish Registers can be viewed on microfilm at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies, Aylesbury.  Great Marlow: All Saints Parish Church Baptisms 1592 to 1907, and Burials 1592 to 1940 have been published in book form by The Eureka Partnership www.eurekapartnership.com and Great Marlow Marriages 1592 to 1837 have been published on microfiche by Bucklinghamshire Family History Society www.bucksfhs.org.uk

The BELL family appear to have been in Aylesbury for several generations and the registers of this parish have been published on CD by Buckinghamshire Family History Society

This is amazing information.  I have been doing some research for a friend in Australia.  She is direct descendant of Thomas Bell Gibbons.  Thomas Bell Gibbons and his wife Hannah (nee Robinson) emigrated to Australia circa 1854.  Hannah was from Hambleden.
Thomas Bell Gibbons is a son of Thomas and Sarah(nee Bell) Gibbons.  It is a little confusing to have have Thomas Bell's parents and grandparents both called Thomas and Sarah Gibbons.
I will have to see if I can find a copy of this book.
In the 1851 census Thomas Bell Gibbons and wife Sarah are staying in Wales at Carnaervonshire.  I wonder what they were doing there?  Perhaps we will never know.
Thank you, Orpheus.

Hello
I read your posts with great interest.  My 3xgreat grandfather was John Thomas Gibbons.  His father was John Gibbons (1784 - 1861), whose father was Thomas Gibbons (1745-1824).  The family were brewers and merchants in Great Marlow.

John Thomas Gibbons was a grocer in Eton in the 1841 Census.  We went bankrupt in 1844, discharged in 1846 and emigrated to Australia in 1849, dying in about 1852.

I'm very very interested in any information you might have on the family

I'm particularly interested in Robert Gibbons (abt 1845) who was married to Margaret Liddle and was involved in the Ned Kelly incident in Eureka.  On his death cert Robert's father was listed as John Thomas and is mother Eliza Susan (unknown).  hmmm... John Thomas was married to Emma Hatch.

I look forward to hearing from you - dale

Apologies if you already have this information = William Edward Gibbons (bn 1826) died at sea (18 Sept 1856).  He was a passenger on the ship "Norfolk" bound for Australia.  He died intestate, he was a coal merchant.  His letters of administration are available at the National Archives (England) D-XI/77 1865-1872 and D-X19/1 6 Dec 1866  His wife, elizabeth is in the Census (1861??) as widowed.

!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have just found a baptism for William Edward Gibbons son of Thomas and Sarah Gibbons Born 3.1.1826 Bap:16.4.1826. (Coal Merchant)
Look forward to your comments.

*** This William is (I think) the William married to Elizabeth who appears in the 1861 census as a coal merchant.  I wonder where they got married?  In the 1851 census there is a William married to an Elizabeth who is farming 150 acres in Hughenden, but I suspect it may be a different William.  But there is no William living in Marlow in 1851, so I am confused.  Perhaps he was outside the county in 1851, in fact his brother Thomas Bell and wife were in Wales!***

I have only found all these entries for the Gibbons family of Great Marlow in the last few days.
I am descended from Richard Gibbons, Ropespinner, Maltster and Brewer of St Peter Street, Great Marlow
Richard was a brother to Thomas (coal merchant) St Peter St, and John (grocer) West St. and sister Elizabeth. Parents Thomas (b1744) and Sarah Crockett.

I am descended from Alfred Bennett Gibbons who migrated to Victoria, Australia in the 1850s.
I would like to make contact with you all

Hello there
John Thomas Gibbons (1809) is my ancestor.  His father was John Gibbons (1784),  the brother of your Richard (1791).

John Thomas Gibbons was married to Emma Hatch and emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1849.  He died in 1852.

I'd be very interested in swapping information

Hi Dale,

I would be interested in swapping information too. I do not know all that much, mainly my direct Australian line, but I am very interested to know and find out about other branches of the family who came out too.
My gggrandfather Richard married Ann Bennett at St Peters, Wallington Berkshire 1816.
They had five known children - Ellen M 1821-1906; Edward F 1824-1862; Charles E 1825; Emily L 1827-1906; Alfred B 1828-1905. Richard died age 78 at White Waltham in 1869.

How were you thinking of pursuing this. I am a little reticent about the use of the internet.  That shows my age I guess.

I have a brief contact with another descendant of John Thomas Gibbons, also living in Victoria.

Cheers
Doreen

I have just found Catherine Gibbons' birth certificate.  Catherine was the Daughter of John Thomas GIBBONS and Emma HATCH.  It lists the registration district as Easthampstead Union - does this mean she was born in the workhouse?  or did "Union" refer to a wider parish?  I know that John Thomas Gibbons went bankrupt in 1844 - and emigrated to Australia in 1849.  But my info tells me he was one of the Great Marlow Gibbons so I'm surprised that another family member did not help the family out..

Grateful if someone could help with this - John Thomas is something of an enigma to me.

cheers, dale

Hi,

I couldn't help but join in the chat about the Gibbons family.

My grandmother was Mary Ann Gibbons (1886 - 1965), and I'm in contact with a few other Gibbons family members in Halifax UK.

I've been chatting on and off over the last few months with Dale, we share a common GGGreat granfather and she sent me this link.

Part of the reason for my jumping in like this is that Orpheus mentioned the Gibbons marrying into the WETHERED brewing family.

Well it seems this might have happened earlier than 1807, here's an exert from bucksfhs.org.uk:-

1744 George Wethered m. Elizabeth Gibbons
George Wethered, son of Edward & Susannah Wethered of Penn (V.C.H.)
1745 Birth of George son of George & Elizabeth Wethered
1757 Death of Elizabeth wife of George Wethered
1758 George Wethered m. Anne Reynolds
1761 Birth of Thomas son of George & Anne Wethered

It seems an Elizabeth Gibbons married into the Wethered family as early as 1744 and they had a son.

This thread has been very interesting and has helped me with a few missing dates keep up the good work!  ;D

Does anyone have any pictures of the Gibbons family?

I have one picture which I believe shows some members of the Gibbons family, my mother claims to remember one of the people in the picture but all the others are a mystery. The picture looks to have been taken pre World War 1, about 1912 ish.

Cheers

Andy
