Sports Photographer
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 01:06 GMT (UK) »
Hello All:
Does anyone have any ideas where I would look for my great uncle who was , from what I have been told, a sports photographer?  This would likely be in the 1930s to the 1950s possible 60s when a 2nd cousin met him.  He doesn't remember anything other than his dad calling him Uncle Alfie (Alfred Hart).  This would be in the London area.  He was born in the 1880s so would be long gone.
I have tried Goggling his name in different forms along with the word photographer but nothing has turned up.

Any suggestions much appreciated.
Regards,
Alva

Hi Alva
Not sure by what you say what sport he was actually taking photos of. I say this because, if it was not a 'mainstream sport' e.g. football, then he could have been a freelancer during the time frame given.
If on the other hand he was employed, then, although I don't have any connection with London, it might be worth your while looking at the Evening Standard sports pages at a library,
or others such as the Guardian etc. As a longshot, if he was employed you might want to consider writing to the National Union of Journalist (NUJ) to see whether he was a member and could shed more light on it for you.

Hello failsafe:
Thanks for your response.  I really don't have a lot of info on this great uncle.  I was in England this past fall and a 2nd cousin was telling me of this uncle he had met when he was a child.  He said he was a sports photographer.  Other than that, he didn't really pay attention to any further conversations which seems quite common place.  He was close to all the relatives (by location) and I was way across the pond, yet seem to know much more than those living right near and had met some of our ancestors. I'm finding those relatives over there are actually not all that interested in their family history. So, it's with the help of forums such as this that I eventually find what I am looking for.
Thanks again for repsonding.
Alva

Hello Alva,

It might be worthwhile contacting the Master Photographers Association. The MPA was established in 1952. It's the UK's only organisation for full time, qualified and professional photographers . www.thempa.com

Wikipedia has a list of British sports magazines. You'd need to check through them to see which were published during the 1930s to 1960s. Some on the list were first published after the 1960s.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:British_sports_magazines

I'm interested in the Hart connection. Do you have anymore about these?
