Coram, Cornwall request BARKELL
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 00:54 GMT (UK) »
I have a marriage for a WIlliam Barkell to Susannah Weeks that took place in Bere Ferres, Devon on 21 May 1818.

Their son John was born in Bere Alston on 28 Feb 1819 and on his baptism register it states that the parents abode was Coram, Cornwall.

If anyone can tell me more about COram or can find more information on the Barkell/Barkel/Barkle/Barkla  of that area I would appreciate it.

Thank you

Dan

Hi Dan,

I am afraid we are not getting anywhere with this one. Coram I have never heard. I know of no parish I can suggest to match that. Have you seen the original baptismal record? Here you say Coram yet I note on your Devon Lookup I see Croan was used as the residence.

The thing that springs to mind with that one is Crowan. (certainly plenty of tin miners about Crowan). I have worked on some of these in the past and a James and Grace spring to mind who had children baptised in Crowan under Barkle, Bartle and even Baskle around the same time your couple were in Devon. Looking back earlier in Crowan, there are plenty of marriages listed for different variants of Bartle, Bartell, Barkle, Barkell, so you may find records under all sorts of variants.

Cheers Kris  :)
