Electoral Rolls in Leyton
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 00:44 GMT (UK) »
Hello All:
Could someone please tell me where I could write for an Electoral Roll look up for a residence where my great grandmother as well as my great aunt and uncle lived in the 1920s to possibly the 1940s.  Though my great grandmother's death certificate said it was in registered in West Ham, I know that there are many sub-districts where the Leyton E.Rs could be.
Looking forward to any help.
Regards,
Alva

Hi Alva, As I understand it, elecctoral rolls are arranged by street address not surname...
Maybe a good place to start asking for help would be at the Local Studies Library closest to where you think your family lived... they may be able to do a lookup, depending on the info you can supply,  and if not, may give you ideas how to proceed.

There will be someone else reply I'd think who will know more about this than I, but hope this is a start.

Alva.

Sometime in the 1970's, the County Borough of West Ham merged with the adjoining  Borough of East Ham to become the one borough of the County Borough of Newham.

Leyton is still a area in Newham as is Leytonstone--and Newham has a excellent website providing lot's of local data.

Hello all:

Thanks you so much for your responses.  I wrote to the Redbridge council as they have been very helpful in the past and they did it again.  They have directed  me to Waltham Forest at  wf.libs@walthamforest.gov.uk . Apparently the Leyton library is situated here.  I have also written to the Council of Newham but they have not yet responded.  So, thank you all and now I am off to write to Waltham Forest.

If you go to the website for the London Borough of Waltham Forest at
http://www.walthamforest.gov.uk
and scroll down at the left to 'Local History and Heritage' and click on that
you will see the link for the Vestry House Museum in Walthamstow which holds the electoral registers for Leyton, Leytonstone and Walthamstow for that period.
Please note the limited opening hours. The search you need can only be reasonably done with an address
