Great information, which I did not know, and having numerous twins in my line I find it very helpful, thanks all.

The reason the time should be recorded is because (in part at least) for inheritance purposes, the oldest child may only be a minute or two older but in legal terms a minute is as good as a decade for inheritance purposes.

Well I am glad they don't worry about that today, being that I am 10 minutes younger than my twin  ;D ;D

I have birth certificates for a set of twins born 1876 and they do indeed show the time of birth.  There was 15 minutes between births.

Kerry

Snap :)  Just received my certificates from GRO for 1919 and 15 minutes apart. :)

Twins run in our family, dad being a twin, must dig out the birth certificate and see what it says, but I was always told he was the younger, the other twins I have come across they just state whether "older" or "younger"

Kiwi

Twins run in my family too, I have one family who had 3 sets!  My mum was a twin and I haven't seen her birth certificate, I would be interested to see what they wrote by the 1940s.  I think she was the youngest.

Kerry,

Twins on dads side, his mothers side, his fathers side, not to mention twins on my mothers side as well ...... must sit down one day and count them ;D

Dad was in 1909 so like you it would be interesting to see how it compares with todays ones.    The ones for twins that I have found have been the registration.

Cheers

Kiwi

A couple of years ago I started a thread on Rootschat about how many twins people had on their trees, I counted mine and there were many twins, can't remember the exact number.  Unfortunately the thread got moved to ToT board, and of course it was deleted after 3 months and disappeared.  >:(

But it would seem that twins in families are more common than I first expected them to be.

Kerry,

On one side I have  a set of twins unnamed. :(

Some are identical and the others are a pigeon pair.    Not every twin survived either.

I watched a program once about Twins, and apparently, they are more common than people may think!  Appararently it is said, that if you are left handed, you more than likely started life in the womb as a twin.  There was a lengthy explanation for this, and it really did make sense!

Hi

My mum was a twin. Her maternal grandmother had two siblings who were twins.

I agree that the time of birth listed for twins was for inheritance purposes plus a variety of other reasons.
