Missing family - trying to find townland
« on: Saturday 17 January 09 13:49 GMT (UK) »
Please can someone with local knowledge please help in my search for my Graffin family in 1901?

I have the following information giving a location:

1885  Casheltown from birth certificate
1897  Killygarn from birth certificate
1905  LoughBeg, Ballyscullion from death certificate of Charles
1911  Culnafay from census widow Jane & 3 children
1916  New Ferry, Moneyglass, from marriage details eldest son.

All of the above appear very close together on the map.

Four of the sons of the family, including my grandfather subsequently moved to Scotland.  there is no sign of them being there in 1901.

I have had searches made of the 1901 Ireland census for the following townlands:-

Killygarn, Culnafay, Casheltown, Carmargrin, Toome, Bellaghy, Kilcurry, Moneyglass, Aughterclooney, Ballylummin & Ballybollen.

I realise that there is a possibility that they were missed or moved away for a few years but wondered if there was a townland that I have missed? (given that 2 of the areas given on certificates above do not appear to be townlands)

Thank you

Charlotte

Thank you BallyaltikilliganG

Yes, there have been various versions of the name.  Thank you for pointing out the other families on the 1911.

Hi Charlotte,
Each parish has a list of townlands on applications.proni.gov.uk/geogindx/antr.htm

does your research include www.familysearch.com eg could this be relevant? Charles Graffan
CHARLES GRAFFAN   Birth:  26 APR 1871   , Antrim, Ireland Parents:
  Father:  WILLIAM GRAFFAN  Family
  Mother:  MARGRET JANE HYNDMAN
It says its an extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record
Family search has other Graffin records before 1880s but few thereafter

does your research include  www.emeraldancestors.com/search/marriages/viewlistmarriages.
I selected it in case Charles as a first name runs down the generations and might be just over the county border in the next parish or where she lived.
1853 charles  GRAFFIN  marrying  margaret     Londonderry

local history records are often filed under civil parish
Aughterclooney, is in the civil parish of Ahoghill
Ballybollen. is in two civil parish of Ahoghill  and Drummaul probably cut in half by the parish boundaries
Ballylummin is in the civil parish of Ahoghill
Bellaghy, is in the civil parish of Rasharkin Co Antrim, Bellaghy Road is Co Derry
Carmargrin, checked spelling I think it is Carmagrim is in the civil parish of Portglenone
Casheltown, is in the civil parish of Portglenone, and has Griffins in Griffiths
Culnafay, is in the civil parish of Ballyscullion Grange, and has Griffins in Griffiths
Kilcurry, is in the civil parish of Portglenone
Killygarn, is in the civil parish of Portglenone
Moneyglass, is in the civil parish of Duneane
Toome, is a townland is in the civil parish of Duneane try www.toome.towntalk.co.uk/about/index

I used for the above  http://applications.proni.gov.uk/geogindx/townantr.htm, Griffiths below and google

you already know they are close together I had a quick look at the parishes map for Co Antrim on a PRONI map http://applications.proni.gov.uk/geogindx/antr.htm

so that triggered me to suggest going back in time the 1850s/early 60s which has wonderful substitute for census and has about 10 Graffins,it also has the ability to see where each named lived on a map.ie http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search
Graffin  Henry  Cloghogue  Antrim  Duneane
Graffin  James  Culnafay  Antrim  Ballyscullion Grange
Graffin  John  Culnafay  Antrim  Ballyscullion Grange
Graffin  James  Ardnaglass  Antrim  Ballyscullion Grange
Graffin  Robert  Cardonaghy  Antrim  Ahoghill
Graffin  Thomas  Corbally  Antrim  Ahoghill
Graffin  James  Corbally  Antrim  Ahoghill
Graffin  Alexander  Corbally  Antrim  Ahoghill
Graffin  John  Lisnagaver  Antrim  Rasharkin
Graffin  Michael  Cappagh  Tipperary, North Riding  Toem
you could also search the above for your townlands and the Griffin variation

I did wonder why they appear to be on the move, maybe jobs were bad, or his/her occupation made it necessary.  I think that’s as much as I can offer you, continue to seek help from those with local knowledge, I now live in England so limited. Its an interesting place to visit!!
Good luck, Jim

Thank you so much for all the information Jim.  I have just skimmed through it for now but will go back and study it with all the links in greater depth.  I have come across some of it before, such as the marriage of Charles & Margaret in Bellaghy but so far haven't proved any certain link, except that as you have suggested the name Charles does seem to run in the family.

Thank you once again

Hi Folks

I too am searching for Graffin in Duneane, but my family maybe a generation back.  Patrick Graffin was living in Creeve, his wife I think was Annie O'Halleron, their Daughter Elizabeth was born around 1837, in 1865 she married my GG Grandfather Joseph Ward in Belfast, he died in 1874 and in 1880 she remarried Thomas Kielty of Shanes castle. Though both were living in belfast at the time.

She had a sister Saah born 1841 and married in 1890 to Henry mcKeown, they were living on the family farm in Creeve in 1901,

Their brother Hugh was born in 1846 and never married, hugh and sarah and Henry were all living in Creeve in 1911, this is my brick wall, dont know when they died and where they would be buried.  Dont have any dates of info on the parents Annie & Patrick

Help help would be greatly Appreciated.

Would these be their deaths?  From LDS Pilot Site
Henry McKeown, born 1839 died Jan-March 1916, Antrim Registration District
Sarah McKeown, born 1841 died Jan-March 1916,Antrim Registration District
No sign of Hugh's death.  He may have died after 1922 when the index stops
Any use??

Cully, Bannister, McConnell, Wallace (Co. Armagh)  Anderson, Ross (Co. Antrim), Gray, Truesdale (Co. Down)
