Irish Occupations
« on: Saturday 17 January 09 12:56 GMT (UK) »
I have spent years looking for information on my grandparents family from Wexford. Laurence Lynch had a drapers shop in Upper George St. Wexford, he is also mentioned living in the Corn Exchange where my grandfather Thomas was born in 1879, trader maybe.
Last address was in 1901 census
Wexford T./High St.  St. Patrick's Forth Wexford Household Lynch Laurence(86) Living on income of money  widow/born Dublin city-Thomas(22)-Mary Agnes(27)-Angela Kearney(6)gd-Mary Whelan(14)servant.
Where would I find information re Corn Exchange records or drapers.
Here's hoping.
Good Luck to everyone in their searches.

Hi Anne

Cornmarket was owned by the Town Corporation and was even the Town Hall for a time. As such, you may find that its history, and that of the people who lived and worked there, is fairly well documented either by a local history group or a local author. Might be worth contacting the town library in the first instance:  +353 53 9121637,   wexfordlib[at]wexfordcoco.ie .

You might find this interesting: http://ireland.archiseek.com/buildings_ireland/wexford/wexford/courthouse.html.

Good luck

from Slaters Commercial directory of 1881

Lawrence Lynch , Corn market, Wexford - Clothes Dealer

I would say Cornmarket in this case is more a street or area, rather than a specific location or building.
