Ah curiosity ...that's what is keeping me from the housework...are you sure you want to know! ;D

If you go into the 1911 search page and clear everything you can then put a comma (or other random non-letter may work too) into the surname field.....

Then you just start thinking of occupations and put them in the occupation box and search...and it should tell you how many there are. Then you view the list and see who is there with that word.   It may be that their occupation has more than one word so it's not that exact but helps you narrow things down.

You can start to narrow down by locality, other names in household, birth years etc if you are doing a serious search of course. (and obviously put a first and last name in the box if you were looking for a John Smith who was a baker for example)

Have fun!

Milly

Hi again,
Not the revelations I had in mind when I started this thread, surprised about the extra years of fertility of my gt-grandmother - but I'm finding all these occupational quirks fascinating for the year 1911.  Anybody found any more oddities using Milly's clever technique?

;D ;D ;D ;D

This got me thinking what I would have entered for one of our teens ....  and "sleeps" came to mind. So I did a search and there were 84 people with the occupation "sleeps"....and the majority of them appear to be between the age of 14 and 19.   ;D ;D ;D

Skives - isn't that a word for doging school/work, as in one skives off work?  Or a misspelling of skivvy maybe?

These are hilarious!   ;D ;D ;D

I think I'll leave the searching to you two...I'm addicted enough to this site, without having something else!

Moira,
And what was the name of the only professed "Liar" in the whole kingdom in 1911....?  And it's no surprise that Ladbroke's or William Hill's or Coral's were not doing a roaring trade then if there was but the solitary "Gambler".  Hilarious indeed!
