Mystery Family
« on: Friday 16 January 09 11:47 GMT (UK) »
I can find no trace of this family on a census prior to 1901. I do wonder if there was a second marriage - and the older children perhaps belong to one of the couple only - but whatever - I can't find anyone. it is like they teleported to 1901.

Any suggestions much appreciated

Hi Trish,
could this be them? In the 1891 census St Albans, Hertfordshire,

William Hill 39
Sarah A Hill 38
Arthur W Hill 15
Joseph W Hill 14
Mary J Hill 11
Harry Hill 9
George Hill 6
Bob S Hill 4

Trouble with that one is that not all the ages tie up, and they are all entered as born St Albans. (RG12/1116/114/53)

I agree Jen,
but if there is one thing I have learnt about ancestry it is that not everything does tie up.

I agree the ages are out - but it is closer than anything I have been able to find. I'll have a look - many thanks for checking - tis very strange

Trish

Edit: Sadly William and Sarah A with the younger children (and a couple more) are still in Hertfordshire in 1901 - slight variation on birthplace but the same family - so definitely not mine.

Sigh - still seems to be related to teleporting. I am wondering if a name change is involved?

Hi Trish

Think I could have found them and it would appear to be a change of name.   The address in 1901 is 11 Preston Road, West Ham, Stratford, Essex and so I checked this address on the 1891 census and there they were (I think) with 2 older children also:

Wm. Weaver     40     Metal Maker        b. Whitechapel
Sarah Weaver   36     Metal Maker Box Maker   b. Bethnal Green
Wm. J. Weaver  17                                            b. Bethnal Green
Sarah Weaver   14     Metal Maker Box Maker              ditto
Josh. Weaver    12     Errand Boy                                  ditto
Mary Weaver      5                                             b. Stratford, Essex
Harry Weaver     3                                                     ditto

Ref. RG12 - 1310 - 83 - 32

Have done a little digging - in 1911 William is still Hill.   Prior to 1901 he is William Weaver on the census 1851/1861/1871/1881 and shown to be a son of a Henry and Ann Weaver.   Checked the birth of son Joseph and this appears to have been as Hill and I think he married as a Hill too.   I guess the other children might have been registered as Hill too.

Have only viewed a transcript for 1851 - St. Mary, Whitechapel

Henry Weaver       24      born Bethnal Green
Ann Weaver           21      born Whitechapel
William Weaver      10 mos.   b. Spitalfields

Ref. HO107 - 1545 - 357 - 39

There is no birth registration for a William Weaver in 1850 in the right area but there is one for a William Hill.   By 1861 Henry and Ann have a number of other children BUT I don't think they actually married until 1859 - in Dec. qtr. at Whitechapel is a possible marriage of a Henry Weaver and Anne Hill.

So, until 1891 - for day to day living William was known as Weaver although for civil registration it seems he reverted to his birth name of Hill and finally became known as this between 1891 and 1901.   The 1851 Census would indicate that Henry was the likely father but perhaps he wasn't after all and this is why William reverted to his birth surname of Hill.   All conjecture of course but it makes some kind of sense.

Hope this helps.

Hello Annette

I have just found your reply - and what a wonderful find it seems to be - I shall now go and check the census - I thought the name had to be the issue - but didn't even think about checking the address - how very short sighted of me. I always assume folks in London areas move around all the time - obviously a bad assumption. I did check via given names only, somehow managed to miss this one, probably because of the Henry/Harry etc

I am mainly interested in Susan. She definitely married as a Hill (1918) I have the certificate. I guess I should be grateful they were on one census with the name Hill - or I may never have found them!

Thank you so much for the find and your thoughts - it certainly makes much sense.

Hi Trish 251, I am doing a research for a friend. His grandfather was William James Hill, b.1874. He was the brother of Susan Hill. I would be interested to know what other information you have found out about the Hill/Weaver family. The data that I have found was quite a surprise to my friend, so If I can help you in any way let me know.
