The Service Records on Ancestry are at about surname N at the moment and are gradually been put online.You may be able to find his Medal Index Card online if you have his service number...It wont have personal info on it but there may be a few clues.
The Units War Diary rarely mentions soldiers names unless they had performed a brave deed but you can see what your ancestors were doing at the time.you can get them from Documents Online at the NA.
Why Two numbers?? He was a Territorial Soldier and in 1917 they were renumbered so his first 4 digit
number was superseded.
