louisa baker
« on: Wednesday 14 January 09 20:43 GMT (UK) »
im wondering if my louisa baker might have come from a travelling background.she married mark goldup a/m/j 1863 at bridge near canterbury.he died 1878 elham, kent.his occupation was dealer in pigs.on the 1881 louisa is a general dealer,on the 1891 shes a wood/timber dealer and on the 1901 shes living alone and is a bobbing maker and cutter and dealer in pigs or pegs.on the 1901 louisas son mark baker goldup is a general dealer at 5 all saints lane, canterbury.this area has a bit of a gypsy feel to it,with some neighbours being watercress hawkers, fish dealers and sweeps.i know there were bakers in the canterbury area at this time who were travellers, and ive seen it mentioned on the kent romany roots board that there was a goldup family in kent with romany connections.any thoughts or opinions on louisas heritage or help with her family would be greatly appreciated, many thanks, nel.

Hi

in 1861there is a Louisa Baker b St Mary Canterbey (sic) , Kent, 20 is living in Battersea St Mary, Surrey as a servant for George finch an attorney at law/solicitor.

Do you have Louisa and mark's marriage cert ..that would give us her father's name, so that we could search for her in 1851.

Hi Nel

Louisa BAKER bc1841 Barham is, I feel (from some notes I've made), the dau of James and Margaret who were living in Stelling from 1861+ - wood dealers.  James BAKER bc1801 Canterbury and Margaret, his wife, bc1800-1806 Ripple/Sutton, Kent - you should be able to find them on the census - I won't post details as I believe you can access this.

casaguidi, many thanks for that,i already had james and margarets gg granddaughter elizabeth down as the possible wife of mark goldup(1867),he definately married an elizabeth baker from canterbury but i believe her birthdate is given as 1877,not 1871.the fact that mark goldup snr married james and margarets daughter louisa makes it more compelling.to add further weight to it,on the 1881 margaret has living with her a thomas goldup and hes described as her g grandson.the problem is,theres another elizabeth baker b1873 canterbury that seems to fit the bill, shes the daughter of samuel baker b 1848,walmer,kent,general dealer, and elizabeth b1854 canterbury.on the 1871 hes lodging with william todd and family in canterbury.james and margarets son james baker b1850 married naomi todd b1850,so thats another link.it seems likely that one of these elizabeths is the one im looking for,but which?any help appreciated, nel.
