Dunn's Court, Sutton

Hi

I've returned to a branch and can't trace the rough location of this street.

Looking at the 1851 census it is Dunn's Court in the Civil Parish of Sutton and Ecclesiastical Parish of St Mark's in Sculcoates.

Census ref 1851 HO107 P2360 F177 Pg9

I know the Sutton registration district was big but would Dunn's Court have been somewhere the present Sutton village?

Unfortunately I can't find it on any of my maps.

St Mark's was on St Mark's St (figures!) off Dansom lane, which is pretty close to the city centre.  It was built in 1844 to serve a district east of the River Hull assigned from Sutton, so not Sutton village at all.  You'd best look on old maps between Dansom Lane and the river.

Looking at the pages either side of your 1851 ref, then Dunn's Court is somewhere off Witham in Hull.

The 'Civil Parish of Sutton' caused me much confusion in my early days of family history, until I realised it was just a part of Hull rather than Sutton village.

No wonder I couldn't find it. It all falls into place I think now as they ended up living in Dansom Lane!

Hi Ian,

An uncle recently gave me a copy of an old map of the Witham area which shows Dunn's Court as a row of houses off, and running parallel with, Malton Street which runs between Witham and Hyperion Street.  The row of houses runs north from the corner of Coelus Street towards Witham on the west side of Malton Street. Unfortunately the map isn't dated. Google Maps shows the streets but the area now appears to be industrial units.

There are two photos of Dunn's Court in 'Forgotten Hull 2' by Graham Wilkinson, Kingston Press. It could be out of print but you may be able to order it via the inter-library service.
