Charles ROSEVEAR, Padstow, Cornwall, 26 Nov 1830
« on: Tuesday 13 January 09 17:06 GMT (UK) »
Reached a dead end with my skills on my GG Grandfather.  Married Peggy Langdon in 1851 of Saint Evel, Cornwall.  Not quite sure how to proceed.

I'll be visiting Cornwall this summer from US to put a marker and sculpture on ancestors grave and thought I might be able to find out more at Truro's CRO.  Any advice on use of this facility?

Hi dbawden,

A big welcome to RootsChat and the Cornwall Board.  ;D

I have not been fortunate enough to be able to visit the CRO but I may be able to help with some of your history

What is it you are hoping to find?

I guess you have Charles baptism since you have the date

Charles ROSEVEAR bap 26 Dec 1830 Padstow mother Jane spinster of Padstow

Peggy LANGDON was baptised in St Eval 15 Jan 1832 parents Arthur and Peggy father Carpenter

Arthur LANGDON otp = Peggy VIVIAN otp 26 Apr 1823 St Eval

I do see baptisms are on the IGI so wont repeat but you may not be aware of this one - in 1820 I do note

Nancy VIVIAN bastard of Peggy Vivian 12 Nov 1820

Arthur was baptised 29 Apr 1798 Mawgan in Pydar parents Henry and Elizabeth (again probably cant add to IGI)

Henry LANGDON of Rame = Elizabeth AUSTEN otp 5 Jan 1782 St Eval

Betty LANGDON aged 80 was buried St Eval 6 Nov 1839
Henry LANGDON aged 85 was buried St Eval 13 Jun 1842

Cheers Kris  :)

If you want to visit the CRO, you need to contact them first and book - it can get very busy. You can get a CARN card at the office, but you will need at least one piece of ID - best to check first.

Be prepared. You can take papers and pencil (not pen!) into the search room in a clear document wallet. Do as much research as you can beforehand, and have a list of what you want to look up. It's all too easy to get distracted and you're coming a long way to forget something! Last time I was there, a woman sitting next to me was searching through parish records for a baptism, having only one census entry to check against. She hadn't bought her relative's marriage certificate, so didn't know father's name or occupation and wasn't sure about age of place of birth - how not to do things!

Have you read this info?

The staff are very helpful and will help you with the records. Parish records and wills and more are at the CRO in Truro. There's no cafe on site, someone selling sandwiches comes, so taking a drink is a good idea. There's a supermarket about 5 minutes away.
There's also the Cornwall Centre in Redruth

No appointment necessary and very easy to find - about a minute from the station.

have fun!

Kris:  The amount of research you are doing is astounding.  What sources are you accessing to find this information besides IGI, On line clerks, and census?  I'm still working on how to do this and learning.

Osprey:  Thank you for the advice on how to proceed at CRO.  I hope to be staying in St. Austell for a week so I can get into some research as well as see the ancestral sites.

Again to all, thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Hi D,

I have been sitting here at the microfiche reader where I transcribed these records directly from the microfiche. (Very little online for Padstow)

Unfortunately being on the other side of the world, I am unable to visit the CRO myself. For many years I would order the films in through the LDS family history library, but I am a long way from a LDS Family History Library which makes it a little difficult. (You can only book a reader for a limited time) and although they are very generous and will hold the film a few weeks given the distance, I never got far each time I ordered some film in. I was getting them in again and again, looking for my elusive folk, so I started purchasing the records for my parishes of interest on microfiche supplied by  the CRO.

Cheers Kris  :)

Thanks Kris.  That opens up a whole new option.  I've been ordering the LDS films but I could see that having a library of parish films at a real advantage.  It also would be cost effective as I pay $6 to loan each film from them for a month.  I'll try ordering some from the National Archives if I can figure how to do that next.

Dave

ps:  My other research has been in Finland and I was overwhelmed by the support I got from members.  I didn't think I'd get much help trying to research my Cornish roots, but...wow.  Unfortunately no good deed goes unpunished.  You'll probably be hearing again from me.
