Hello Ralphtheclaret.

I have a copy of the book in question, The Dublin Metropolitan Police by Jim Herlihy.

interesting thanks...its something I spotted whilst googling - could be a total red herring, I'm searching for my Gt Grandfathers dad who was deceased by the 1911 census...if all else fails hopefully he hadn't died before 1901.

Hello,
I'm looking for info on my g.g.g. grandfather, William Wallace.
He was born c1834 Ireland & worked in DMP before relocating to Chester around 1866. He is listed on the UK census as a detective inspector.
His son Samuel also joined the police force in Chester.
He married Fanny White in 1863 in Crumlin, Dublin.  They appear to already have 2 children at this stage.  William Wallace died in 1881 in England.
My research into the Irish side of the family starts here so any snippits of information would be gratefully received.
Failing this I will write to Garda Archives & see what crops up.

Thanks for all your help. :)
I've just found out some other info:
Sgt 196 William Wallace Born circa 1836 Ireland, joined Chester City Police 9th June 1865
Does this correlate with your findings?
Many thanks again for your assitance.
