Where are these places? (Completed)
« on: Sunday 11 January 09 16:50 GMT (UK) »
I have received some research from Staffs. Archives which shows nine children born to William Mosedale and Susanna Twigg.

The parish is given as Hanbury for all of them.  The abode for the first 7 is Rolleston, Castle Hay ?? (possibly Bank).  The last 2 are shown as King's Standing.

Does anyone know these places?  Do they still exist?

I believe William and Sarah were married about 1819 (birth of first son, Joseph). Can anyone help with date and place please?

Hello Lynne

Rollaston is about 3 miles north of Burton on Trent.

Hansbury is about 4 miles west of Rollaston.

You can see these on google maps ;)

Kings Standing doesn't seem to be on the maps, but an ordinary google search suggests it is near Hanbury  ;)

Thanks Mum44 for the marriage details.  Would it have been in Stafford, or is that just the registration district?

It's King's Standing that is puzzling.  The baptism is Hanbury and abode KS.  Surely it wouldn't be the one near Birmingham?

I would think it was in Stafford;  there were no registrations districts before 1837 when civil registration began   :)

Hello,

The batch number for the marriage Mosedale/Twigg starts with an I and could be, according to the Hugh Wallis site, submitted entries. Looking at some of the entries on that batch that were post 1837, they were at different churches in Staffordshire and not necessarily in Stafford itself.
Click on the batch no on the IGI entry and look at the list and cross reference with freebmd for the later ones. It may be that the entries are all for places in the Burton - Tutbury - Hanbury area.

Hello Handm

One of the later ones on IGI is George, who is William's son.  I have his marriage certificate to Fanny married in Tutbury.

Thanks for the advice.

Hi All,

I live near Rolleston and Tutbury and a friend of mine lives in Hanbury. I have just 'phoned him and he tells me Kings Standing is just outside Hanbury(but I'd not heard of it.) It apparently now consists of a few old cottages and half a dozen modern houses, it's also home to Kings Standing Hall which belonged to a local business man.
Castle Hay is just outside Tutbury. Rolleston,Tutbury and Hanbury are villages that run of from each other and wouldn't have been highly populated in the 1800's.

let me know if you need any other info.

kind regards

Sandra
