What info would I find on a US Death Cert?
« on: Sunday 11 January 09 09:40 GMT (UK) »
Just wondering if it's worth ordering one.  I have a name and a likely death in NY 1931.  Would the death cert give me the name of the persons parents?

I haven't gotten one from NY State from that time period, but I expect that it would have the parents' names.  I have a New York City one from 1908 that had the parents' names.

Found a sample from 1931 from New York City.   Don't know if will be exactly the same for one issued outside the City or not.    Question might be if the informant for the DC actually would have known who the parents were ??

Thanks.  Guess it's a bit of a gamble what info you actually get!  ::)

If you're referring to the other thread about James McAllister, then that is in New York City, so there is at least a spot for parents' names.

I have death certificates from New York City for the years 1926 and 1936 and they do list the parents names. One has both parents names.  The other only the father's name and mother Unknown.

A great site for the NYC Death Index is:  http://www.italiangen.org/NYCDeathSearch.asp

It gives name, age at death, date of death, place of death and certificate number.  It has a form right there to order the certificate.

I found one James McAllister who died in 1931.  You might want to check the site out yourself as there are other James McAllisters, close to that year.

Surname Given Name Age Month Day Year Certificate Number County Soundex
Mcallister  James  49 y  Apr  23  1931  732  Richmond  M242

Good luck.
