could you tell me if DredgesYard Newbury still exists,also Adeys Lane???
or do you no if there are any old photos of either place

Dredges Yard was renamed Ashdown Court in 1878 and can be found on old OS maps under that name. However, it has not survived (almost all the old courts and yards have gone). It ran off from the west side of Northbrook St just south of West Street.

I have not come across Adeys Lane. There is an Adeys Close http://tinyurl.com/a3tplo that could well have been it. The buildings on either side are or were known as Adey's Buildings - after their builder.

Sorry - didn't answer the second part of the question.

There are very few photos of the old yards - and many that do exist are of unknown yards. There will be aerial photos from the 40s and 50s that show the rooftops. The best source is West Berkshire Museum.

Not without going through censuses, directories, telephone books etc. - for which I would need an approximate date and which of the two places you think they were in at that date.

I am also looking for a family who lived Dredge's Yard, Newbury, but the family name was not Gunter.
However, in my research I noticed the 1851 Census index says that there are TWO Dredge's Yards.

One is in Northbrook St. as previously mentioned, but there is another in Bartholomew St.
Not quite sure of its location, but will let you knwo when I find it.

Of corse i could be wrong,could i ask the name of the famil.y which you are searching??
It was Richard Gunter and his wife Emma (Aldrige)who lived here and had a son Thomas who was my GGrandfather
I will be interested in any information you come across

Hi Spec,
The family I have is the STROUDs. They were definitely in Dredges Yard, Bartholomew Street in 1851, as they appear on the census index and were still there in 1856 as it appears on a birth certificate
There are no GUNTERs living in Newbury town centre at that time (1851), However there are about 26 living in and around Aldermaston. (comes under district of Bradfield). Census info: H0107/1691 folios 230 - 248.
There is no Richard listed there, but there is a Thomas, aged 8.
Not sure if that meets your date criteria.

Hi, I was interested to read about Dredges Yard.  My great great grandfather, William Coplestone,  and my great grandfather, Henry Coplestone,  appear on the 1871 census as living in Dredges Yard.  In the 1841 census they appear at Northbrook Street, and in 1861 William appears in Staples Yard.  Do you know whereabouts that was situated?  William's occupation was a tailor.  Do you have any info on the occupations of other residents of these Yards?
