Fresh eyes required, please
« on: Saturday 10 January 09 15:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi Rootschatters,

I need some help please.

I could do with the answers to two questions 1] My relative Sarah Tierney nee Rimmer's religion [reasons later] and 2] help finding her mother's 3 marriages.

According to her birth certificate Sarah Tierney was born on the 11th February1856 to Michael Tierney dock labourer, and Ann Tierney late Shannahan formerly Donohue. She was born at 19 Cleveland Ave., Birkenhead, mothers address given as 3 Field Street, Birkenhead. Sarah married William Rimmer at Birkenhead Parish church in 1873.

According to the census her parents are from County Tipperary, Ireland. I cannot find Ann Tierney on the 1841 or 1871 census. In 1851, Ann (Donohue) is living with future husband Michael and parents as a visitor. In 1881, Ann is living with Sarah and husband William as Ann Maxwell, widow. It seems that between 1851 and the birth of sarah she became a Shannahan before becoming a Tierney sometime before Sarahs birth in 1856.

I would like to know which churches in the area of Field Street, Birkenhead both Catholic and CofE she would likely of been baptised, purely for any research for the family in Ireland.
And also I would like to find Ann's marriages (I can't find any of the 3 on the BMD for some reason), I am sure she wouldn't have returned to Ireland for each marriage, would she!?  Apart from her daughter's birth certificate I do not have records for the name Shannahan. Because it is difficult to find a time frame for these marriages, it is even harder to find them. If anyone can spot something I have missed I would be very grateful

Thank you

Cathy

Thank you so much you are a star! On previous census she has been a laundress so that fits. Beckwith street has been mentioned before as well, but with the Rimmers, will have to look at my notes.
With renewed interest I have just found a marriage between Michael Maxwell and  a Ann Shannahan, in Liverpool in 1862. I wonder if she never actually married Mr Tierney!

Thanks again

Stupid me!

She is still a Tierney in 1871, so I will ignore that marriage of 1862.

Hi Cathy

It is looking suspiciously like she didn't marry. I had found the death record and have sent for the certificate.

My husband and I have just been" discussing" Sarah's birth certificate. If it says Ann Tierney late Shannahan formerly Donohue which would be her maiden name?

I ask this because in the Griffith valuation there are no Donahue's in Tipperary, there are some Donohoes. There is though, Shannan's. Actually, there is a Matthew Tierney [Michaels father] living in Garryvicleheen and a John Shannahan living in the same town and street! Maybe Michael and Ann were neighbours in the town and when the Tierney's moved to Birkenhead Ann came over for a visit. But to confuse things on the 1851 census for Birkenhead she is O'Donohue or O'Donohoe ,unmarried.

Any help would be appreciated

Moderator, could this message be linked to County Tipperary's page?

May thanks

Hi Jacqui,
I think Ann's maiden name was Donohoe/O'Donohoe and then she married and became Shannahan.
I've just found these details for you on the lancashire BMD site
in 1862 Michael Maxwell married Ann Shanahan who was also Ann Donohoe
See this link
 http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/cgi/marrind.cgi
I feel sure this is your Ann.

Best wishes

Also thought this link may be of interest for you on the surname Donohue and variants.

Cathy

Thank you for your interest it is appreciated.

As you will see on one of my posts I found that ~Donohoe/Maxwell marriage and stupidly rejected it. the reason I did reject it was because she called herself Tierney again in 1871. Maybe she momentarily forgot she had married Mr Maxwell because if that death you found is for our Mr Maxwell, then it was a very brief partnership. In fairness to me I only saw it on Freebmd if I had looked on Lacashire bmd then I would have known for certain it was the correct one, a lesson to learn. I am going to send for the certificate today and see what happens.

The only question I am left with is now her religion, it looking more likely that they were CofI.

Once again thank you, I wouldn't have got this far without your help.
