Welcome to Rootschat.
Firstly, I suggest you remove your personal email address from the thread. To prevent Spam or other misuse, RC does not allow personal email addresses to be quoted on the threads.
I notice on IGI that Janet 1817 and James Smith 1816 are recorded with mothers name as Gullen and Gullon respectively. This could obviously be a mistranscription but the records may also have been mistranscribed on other sites such as ScotlandsPeople (
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk ).
Having said that, I've had a
quick look on SP for a marriage between Shearer and G*ll*n? with no success. You may want to spend more time using variation in spelling. Isabella can quite often be spelled Isobella, Isabel, Isobel, Belle etc, so I suggest not being too precise with your searches.
Have you found deaths of Daniel or Isabella? If they died after 1855, you should be able to find their deaths on SP. The death records would tell you a lot, including their recorded age at death and parents name. Another quick search on SP using "Gillon" (
with Soundex) as surname, "Is" as forename and "Shearer" as other Surname gives 2 results (there are none if name is spelled Gillon without Soundex).
There are 25 Daniel Shearer deaths on SP, only 4 of which were in Midlothian (the county Edinburgh is in). One of them is likely to be Daniel b1814 but one of the others could be the father.
James having the middle name Smith suggests that one of his grandparents would be a Smith, more likely on the maternal side. You could try looking for births of Isabella Gillon with alternative spellings where the mother is Smith.
I have no credits on SP at the moment or I would do a few more detailed searches for you. However, SP is very reasonable if you use the searches carefully.
Hope this helps a bit.
Sorry if some of the above is stating the obvious but since you're new to RC, I've no idea of your experience in searching Scottish records.
