Royal Navy - Nelson's Fleet
« on: Saturday 10 January 09 08:53 GMT (UK) »
A family story has it that my 4xgreat grandfather fought with Nelson's fleet as a midshipman and was badly injured.
I have searched the Battle of Trafalgar sites that have been listed here and his name is not there.
Any suggestions where I may find lists of names in Nelson's fleet for any of the other battles or a general Navy list of men for those years?
His name was Daniel HULME born about 1782 died possibly 1823 possibly Fulham, Middlesex.  Although I have found a death for a Daniel Hulme in freebmd in 1837 but no age is given.
Surnames are listed in my blog - ancestorchaser.blogspot.com.au

If you have tried the database here:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/trafalgarancestors/

and he's not listed, then perhaps there was some problem.  Have you tired variant spellings of the name?  If he was badly wounded, I would have thought that he might have received a pension and so would be listed in the pensions records.

The Navy List did not begin publication until 1814, but there a publication called Steel's Navy List from 1782.

Hello - something that helped me trace a number of Naval ancestors - is a book called ' Tracing Your Naval Ancestors' by Bruno Pappalardo.  There are alot of different sources available as the Royal Navy was religious in keeping records, the book helps you Navigate them - the majority are held at the National Archive in Kew.  Nelson was involved in a number of signifcant Fleet Actions so you will probably need to get into the weeds on this one !

Cheers,

Jason
