Samuel Evans Llandefalle Brick Wall
« on: Thursday 08 January 09 17:00 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for some help with the Evans family from Llandefalle. My GGG Grandfather was Samuel Evans born about 1790, died 19 Sep 1850. He is buried at Maesyberllan Chapel but I have been unable to find any birth details other than on 1841 census. I have obtained a copy of a will of a Samuel Evans farmer from Llandefalle who died c1831. The executor is his eldest son Morgan and the will gives other sons as Samuel, Rees & John. Morgan Evans was born about 1784 and died 21 Mar 1855. He is also buried at Maesyberllan Chapel. The family are Baptists and I have been unable to find any birth records pre 1837. Can anyone help find the final resting place of Samuel who died c1831. Fortunately it doesn't appear to be a very common name but hopefully this will give me his birth year or possibly his wife's name. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I'm stuck at a similar point with my Pembrokeshire baptists and coming up against lack of records. The LDS look to have filmed some of the records for Maesyberllan - it doesn't say what years though.  Can you get to one of their centres to order and look at the films - items 10 & 11 below?

Marriage records should be in the parish church as by Hardwicke's Marriage Act of 1753 and until general registration in 1837, only marriages in the established church were legal apart from for Quakers & Jews. As you have a will, I would think that there would have been a marriage in the parish church.

Parish registers should be at Powys Record Office

and at the National Library in Aberystwyth

Hi Osprey

Thanks for the advice. I have had 1 trip to Llandrindod but didn't manage to find anything in the time I had there and unfortunately as Aberystwyth is about a 5 hour trip for me to get there I don't know when I will be able to go. Our local LDS centre was closed last year but is due to reopen shortly so I will contact them and order the Talachddu films when they reopen.

I don't know if you're still looking for info on this but I was at Llandefalle church today and remembered seeing your post so took some details down of a grave.
"Samuel Evans of Wernbadd Mill in this parish, who died April 13 1860 aged 60 years. Also Mary Evans wife of the aforesaid who died Aug 30 1876 aged 63 years"

There was also a notice in the church porch regarding gravestone inscriptions. Apparently they have all been recorded and are available in booklet form for £3.50

Hi
Thanks for thinking of me. I had already seen this one and ordered the MI's but sadly it is not one of mine. The rest of the Evans family are either buried at Maesyberllan, Talachddu or Hephzibah at Erwood and I think this one is probably at Maesyberllan but the stone was probably too far gone when the MI's were done and sadly I have not found a burial record either.
