St Giles, Oxford 1822 Baptism
« on: Thursday 08 January 09 14:49 GMT (UK) »
I have googled St Giles Oxford and 4 churches are listed.  Am I correct in believing the only St Giles in 1822 was the one that is by the Radcliffe Hospital now.  Also would anyone be able to tell me if the baptism records are still available at the church, if not where they are available.  Many thanks.

Thank you Jamajo.

This is my first time for parish records this is the info I have from IGI:-
Frederick George Westbrook, Christened 15 Sept 1822 Saint Giles Church, Oxford.
Father William Westbrook, mother Elizabeth.

Firstly I would like to know if the IGI is correct and secondly which St Giles and do the records exist?

Would I obtain anymore info by seeing the records in person?

Hi - I have the transcripts (from OFHS) for that church which according to the introduction is - to the north of Oxford city centre outside the city walls at the convergence of the Woodstock and Banbury Roads.

The original registers would be in the Oxfordshire Records Office  - which I think is now at Cowley,  however the transcripts produced by that society are usually very good and I don't think there will be much of value in the originals that is not on the transcripts.

The Baptism you quote is there with the additional interesting info that William (the father) is a grocer.

There are also baptisms for siblings
1823 Elizabeth
1825 Henry William
1826 John Edwin
1828 Richard
1829 Jane

The last three also have the information that William  lives 'near the church'  and the last one the really valuable info that mother Elizabeth was 'late Hammond sp' - in other words her maiden name was Hammond

Thank you Debbie, you have uncovered further information for which I am grateful.

I didn't know that Elizabeth's maiden name was Hammond.  Nor all the names of the siblings and baptism dates.

I do not know what you expect to find in parish records but you have certainly found plenty for me to go on.  This is the first time I have managed to go back that far.

Once again thank you for giving up your time and expertise for me.

Hi - you are very welcome,  I should point out as you say you are new to useing parish registers,  it is quite unusual to have the mothers maiden names included on baptisms - we just got very lucky this time (don't want you to think it will normally be there)

I can see them in 1841 and 1851 census and William as a widower in 1861 & 1871  let me know if you don't have these.

According to Pallots marriages William Westbrook married Elizabeth Hammond 26th September 1815 at Twickenham

DebbieG, I don't have them in 1841 or 1851 census.  I hadn't found the marriage in 1815 in Twickenham I am so surprised at this, not by the date but by the place.

Always more questions than answers why did they come to Oxford from Twickenham? must be for the work.

I had just been googling the church to see if there was a list of the gravestones in St Giles.  On googling the map the church is the one I thought it was.

Thanks once again.

Hi - I did check for Westbrook burials while I had the transcripts for St Giles loaded,  there don't appear to be any at that church - I get the impression they left for London fairly soon after the birth of Elizabeth in 1829.  I did notice - I think it was in the 1851 census that there was an older brother George born in London before they moved to Oxford - I will try and find it again

Looking at your reply again I should be looking for Elizabeth's death between 1851 and 1861
