Derrick, I have loaded some high resolution photos to my public Flickr site:

Probably found 20 Turner Rd/Ash Lane. Seems to be the right vintage which surprised me because that area is mostly very modern large scale housing developments. It was also at the opposite end of the road to that expected, furthest from the town. Just hope there hasn't been a renumbering exercise.
Found The Limes Weeley which is not quite next door to The Black Boy, as my clumsy stitched panorama shows, but it may have been back in your father's day.
May have found No 4/5 Thorpe Rd. Thorpe Rd is mostly rural with a scattering of houses, no numbers, just names except for a row of terraced cottages, which are numbered 1 to 7. They are some way along Thorpe Rd out of the village. The house at the beginning of Thorpe Rd, which I thought would most likely be No 4/5, is a farm and the present occupants assured me it did not have a number. So it looks as if the terrace is the one you want.
The mystery thatched cottage? No sign in the Weeley area. This web site
http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/default.aspx is a good one to search and there are 88 Listed cottages with thatched roofs in the Colchester area!!!
Good luck, Barry
