There was a Black Boy Lane in the c15th  but I have no idea how long it survived. (see http://www.dur.ac.uk/r.h.britnell/Portrait%203.htm)  It was off St Botolph St, parallel to Eld Lane which still exists with some historic buildings.  There is an alleyway in that position now but very run down and definitely not historic.  Magdalen Street is correct and still exists.  Old Heath is the area behind - sorry South of - Magdalen St.  You don't say what date census you refer to but I believe the area was largely built up in the late 1800's.  There was a Baker's Row on the north side of Magdalen Street but it has long since disappeared and I think is now an open yard.  I don't know of a Nevill's Yard but I believe there used to be an agricultural business called Nevill's, in Magdalen Street, again probably disappeared long ago with redevelopment (Magdalen St has`been 'attacked' in a very haphazard manner over decades and is now the least attractive part of old Colchester).  Maidenburgh Street still exists, in the Dutch Quarterand close to the Castle.  It still contains several historic buildings but I don't think Fencers, which was an Inn (see http://www.camulos.com) could now be recognized.  Childwell Alley still exists on the north side of Magdalen Street, not far from the site of Baker's Row, although I confess I had to look it up on the map.  St Johns Green still exists but Dorset or anything like it beats me.  See the Morant map above.  'Ipsman' Road was most probably Ipswich Rd.  If you have a copy of the census image you might see it differently to the transcriber.  Hope this helps but I am sure you will get better info from someone who has lived in Colchester a lot longer than me.

Hi Barry,

Newbie here so please bear with ;

My late father was from Colchester in 1923 (Clay Lane, Mile End),and then moved to 128 Magdalen Street around 1930, ..i googled the address and found you post.

Would you know if the house is still there ?, i live in Bedford and am not familiar with Colchester 2009, any tips on any archives and photo's of that period..and up to WW2. My father must have spent a lot of time in around Colchester ..they finally moved to the village of Weeley.

I am currently researching my family history .(initially on my fathers side) any help or advice on this would be much appreciated.

Kind Reagrds

Derrick

Hi there
If its the same side as the church that was on the corner of Brook St then there is a good chance that it is still there. However I've not lived in Colchester for a few years and Magdalen street was an area of re-generation :(, it would have been a small two up two down terrance housed if thats any help
