Sidney & Ellen Gigg, Youghal 1911 census
« on: Wednesday 07 January 09 21:47 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information about Youghal around the time of the 1911 census.  My ancestor, Ellen Bidgood, may have married a Royal Navy man by the name of Sidney Gigg.  Sidney was posted in Youghal from Feb 1906 to Feb 1910.  I did locate info on Sidney and Ellen Gigg, and their 5 children, as having lived at 1 Church Street in Youghal at the time of the 1911 census.  Along with this info, the word "caretaker" also appeared.

Since their time in Ireland would have been pre-WW1 is it possible that Sidney could also have been employed as a caretaker while serving in the Navy and being stationed in Youghal?

I have no specific questions at this time, I'm really just reaching out to anyone who may have info or links that I might find useful to help get me started on this new leg of my search.

Thanks

Since you know that Sidney Gigg was posted in Youghal until Feb 1910, I take it that you have his service papers which shows that? If so, they should also show his date of discharge from the RN...

I can't imagine the RN allowing its men to persue other employment while still serving. If he was living in Youghal with his family in 1911, then it seems likely that he moved there after discharge, or obtained his discharge in Ireland.

Or, perhaps, the notation 'caretaker' is wrong.

Have you found their marriage in England or Ireland, which will likely be about a year before their eldest child was born?

I do have his service record and he actually returns to Devonport after 1910 and eventually retires from the RN a few years later.  Is it possible his wife could have been a caretaker for that period?

I do have a marriage certificate c. 1892 but I am having difficulties confirming if this Ellen (Bidgood) is actually my relative.  There is a story behind Sidney's connection to the Bidgoods so I've been assuming some details as I forge ahead to see if anything I uncover may prove that Ellen is indeed my ancestor, and Sidney her husband.

Unfortunately there are no records for them in the 1901 census for anywhere in England, but I did find a census record for Sidney in 1901, stationed in Cork with the coastguards, so that fits.  It will be interesting to see what data is available once the 1911 records are released.

Thanks for your feedback.
