Hi Marcus.
The marriage below will give you an idea of what you might have to contend with in Presbyterian records, pre Civil Registration starting.
As aghadowey states, the details on early Presbyterian records are a bit scarce. A large number only give a baptism date and no date of birth. Some only give the father's name on the really early ones.

I don't know if this marriage relates to your Shaws, but it was the only one I have a record of.

Robert Carson married SARAH SHAW, on the 26 July 1832, in Ballymena 1st Presbyterian Church.
Groom resided Ballee, Co Antrim.
Bride resided Ballee, Co Antrim.
Witnesses,  Robert Hardin and John Hardin.
PRONI film reference,  MIC / 1P / 114 / 3.

Ballee is in the Parish of Connor, which is a neighbour to Drummaul.

Emerald Ancestors has 3 James Shaws before 1855, registered in Ballymena.
If you have a LDS Family History Centre near where you live, you could order the church records for those churches.

Regards,
Dixie

There is a James Shaw listed in Drummaul Parish in time of Griffiths Valuation, so would fit as potential father of your James.

He was in Tamlaght townland and his landlord was Samuel McMaster.
