Jackson Family (St Quivox Ayr)
« on: Wednesday 07 January 09 14:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi.
Can anyone help me with details for the father and mother of John Jackson 1819 (all his details are below).
I already Know that their names are John Jackson & Mary Whitton (Whitton spelling varies on different Documents). I know they also had children Robert 1815, Hugh 1823, George 1824, Elizabeth 1827 whom married William Murphy / Moffat 08-12-1848.
If someone could help confirm these children it would be helpful.

I cannot find a death cert or Marriage cert for John 1819. My tree has stopped at John & Mary Whitton and any help would be grateful.

Hello Mark,

If you already know that Elizabeth married William Moffat then you are most likely aware that her father John Jackson age 83 was living at the same address in 1851.

From FREECEN it looks likely that it's your John (70), Mary (60) and Elizabeth (14)  living at Orr Street, Glasgow in 1841.

Regards,
Nel

I am a descendant of Cornelius Jackson born 1863.  His son James is my grandfather.  We are researching the family just now and your information about Cornelius has been very helpful.  James still has two daughers living in the Glasgow area, my mother and my aunt.  His son James died about 10 years ago.

It would be great to hear from you and share information :-)

Hi,

I've found a John Jackson baptised in Co Westmeath, Ireland in1771 and a Mary Whitton baptised 1782 in Co Offaly.  Could they be the start of the Jacksons in our tree?

Also, my grandfather James Jackson, son of Cornelius that died in 1926, had a younger brother called Richard Willis Jackson, born 1903.  I also noticed that some of our trees say that Cornelius had a daughter called Elizabeth but she is not always listed.  Was there an Elizabeth?

I guess I'm the stupid one because I still don't see how Mary/Margaert Bryson turned into Mary/Margaret Whitten. I've seen the birth records from St Quivox and how do we know for sure that's the correct John Jackson? There certainly is plenty of them in Ireland, Scotland, and England all married to a Mary/Margaret. According to the 1871 Scottish census John Jackson married to Mary with children Robert, William, Joseph, Matthew, James, and Cornelius was born in Newton on Ayr, not St. Quivox (they're about 3 miles apart.) Am I being too picky about location?

What other records is the name Margaret Whitten mentioned? Perhaps I missing those records and that's why I'm so wrong?

There is a Margaret Bryson born in Irvine, Ayr (11 miles from Newton) in 1795, couldn't that be the Margaret Bryson listed on the death record John Jackson in 1893?

And can anyone explain why on the birth record for Joseph Jackson born in 1856 it says "Robert Robertson inmate present" under "signature, qualifications, and residence of informant, if out of the house in which trhe birth occurred"?

I have the John Jackson death cert from 1893 mentions Margaret Bryson like everyone else seems to have.

The only other records I have are:

1859 Death Cert for Margaret Jackson ms Bryson wife a house painter in the District of Anderton in the Burgh of Glasgow. Son John Jackson was the infromant. Her father is listed as William Brsyon and mother as Margaret "maiden name unknown to informant"  Her age is listed as 39 but I've seen plenty of documents where some people's ages are all over the place so I don't always go by that.

1889 Death Cert for John Jackson widower of Mary Bryce living in the District of Calton in the Burgh of Glasgow. Age is listed as 71. Father is William Jackson and mother is Agnes ms Irvine. Informant is daughter Catherine Baris or Paris.

Am I totally off the mark?  As we've all seen ages and surnames are often different on documents so is this a possibility here? I would love to know what others think.
