Belgium or Turkey?
« on: Wednesday 07 January 09 03:53 GMT (UK) »
Via the UK Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914 - 1919 data base I've found the details for a member of my extended family tree.

This record gives the Theater of War: Antwerp but the Commonwealth War Graves Commission gives his details on the Halles Memorial Turkey.

Please could anyone offer an explanation for this (& feel free to tell me geography knowledge is lacking  ::). I'd like to clear this up before I enter the details in FH programme, without checking CWGC I would have entered his place of death as Belgium.

Maggiemae

PS: Just in case it helps, he served with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment).

Hello David

His name was Arthur Ernest Cranwell, service no. G/9395.

I've since noticed when the record first comes up on Ancestry it gives his death as 28 June 1915, Gallipoli, when I opened the record and printed it out there was no reference to Gallipoli rather it gives the Theater of War as Antwerp, hence my confusion.

Many thanks
Maggiemae

Hello

thanks for getting back to me

As I thought you appear to be using Ancestry's SDGW data base which is full of errors. I've checked the original SDGW and Gallipoli is recorded there. Consistent with the battalion history and CWGC data.

Hope this helps.

David

Checked his medal Index Card - he is recorded as 'Cramwell'.

David

Thank you for your very helpful reply, I wasn't aware the SDGW data base had errors in it and I will bear this in mind for the future.

I've now found his medal card thanks to you but I now wonder why his service records don't appear, if you have answer for that I would be most appreciative.

Thanks again.

Hi,

As David is not online perhaps I can offer a suggestion;  a lot of WW1 service papers were destroyed in the bombing in WW2.

Hi Nanny Jan

Many thanks for your suggestion, it may well be the explanation in this case.
