The Cowslads, Newbury

Can anyone shed any light on what or where the Cowslads were in Newbury. I have been digging on the net and one website suggests that Donnington Priory was formerly the Cowslads.

The name has popped up against a 13 yr old boy listed with his family on the 1815 Toomer Census but which notes that he was "in Cowslads".

Was it an institution, correctional facility, hospital or school maybe?

The Cowslads were a prominant local family - at one time one lived in Donnington Priory (not the old priory but a the existing building erected on the site).

They were mayors  etc. one left money to, amongst other things, educate local children - the child you have found may well be a Cowslad boy at the local blue school.

I just found this thread as I found my own "Cowslad" boy, Henry Norris age 9 on 1815 Toomer's census of Newbury.  I've managed to find details of the founding of the trust.
