Hi Nell,
Yes, I'd seen that census return but unfortunately I don't believe its my Charles. I'll try and explain the brick wall I've got and maybe somebody can see past it - I've been starring at it for over a year now with no luck !! Here goes.
Charles BULPIT is my great(x2) Grand father. He married Caroline NEWMAN in 1876. On the marriage certificate his father was given as George BULPIT.
I have some census returns for Charles and they give the following :-
1881 Age 32 Birthplace : Andover(HAM)
1891 Age 41 Birthplace : Hurstbourne(HAM)
1901 Age 54 Birthplace : Hurstbourne(HAM)
As these are after his marriage I'm sure I've got the right returns as Caroline is present in all and my great grandfather William appears in them.
So, what about Charles before his marriage ?
Well, there is a Charles BULPIT in Hurstbourne Tarrant in 1871 census, Aged 25 with Birthplace : Hurstbourne, but he's only a lodger so no clues to his siblings or parents. I've assumed this is my Charles.
There is an 1861 census return with a Charles BULPIT, aged 15, Birthplace : Hurstbourne Tarrant which fits. He is living with his grandfather; so, assuming this is mine I can safely say his grand father is John BULPIT. Where is George in 1861 ? In 1851 there is a George, living with his father John, aged 24 in Andover, Birthplace : Hampstead Marshall(BRK). I've assumed this is mine too.
My sticking point is Charles birth/baptism and his mother. The Charles info you gave fits in terms of dates but father and place are wrong.
I've many other "slight" possibilities but cannot fit any George and wife and Charles together with any certainty.
Again, there is a birth in Andover reg district (which covers Hurstbourne) in Q4 1844 - but this is likely to be "your" Charles.
Any ideas or suggestions how I solve this I'd be extremely grateful to hear.
Many thanks
Chris
