Hi all

I am a member of First Ballyeaston Church and have in my possession at the moment the Marriage register for 1849 and 1850. We are putting the Marriage records on computer.

I have looked up the two marriages.  The details are as follows:

29th December 1849
Thomas Carlile, 22 years, Bachelor, Profession a weaver, Residence Carnlea, Father James Carlile a Weaver.
Jane Todd 22 Years, Spinster, Residence Ballyeaston, Father John Todd a Weaver

In Presence of James Carlile and John Lusk

19 April 1850
James Carlile, 23 years, Bachelor, Weaver, Carnlea, Father James Carlile a Weaver.
Jane Todd, 18 Years, Spinster, Ballyeaston, Father John Todd a Weaver.

In Presence of John McCrea and Robert Wilson

I also found baptismal records for Thomas and Jane Carlile

CARLILE        F   Elizabeth                   Thomas        Tod   Janet   29/1/1855    Ballyeaston
CARLISLE       M   William James   Thomas        Todd   Janet   20/2/1853    Ballyalbana

Thomas and James could have been brothers but as for two Jane's I think that one was called Jane and the other Janet and most likely sisters.

Its a wee bit of a mystery this one.

John,
This came out of the blue to me today but I have been intrigued and your possession of the original documents has answered some questions but still left me slightly intrigued. Many thanks.

Most unusual to have one daughter named Jane and another named Janet (and they both married Carlisle who are possibly brothers).
Have seen a few times instances in church registers where ministers got confused and entered the wrong mother's name in baptisms.
What way did the 2 brides sign the registers? (i.e. Jane, Janet or a mark?)
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Aghadowey

1849 Jane is signed by her mark and also Thomas by his mark
1850 signed Jane Todd and signed James Carlile.

I believe they are two sisters and two brothers!!
I have found quite a bit of stuff for Thomas and Janet and definately believe they were certainly one couple.

Thomas, widower of Janet Todd, drowning in a ditch on a farm in Renfrewshire, aged 52, in 1882
