How to find firms and apprentices of organ pipe makers
« on: Tuesday 06 January 09 10:56 GMT (UK) »
My great Uncle Joesph William Armitage (born 1866 St Lukes clerkenwell) was an organ pipe maker listed in 1891 census Watsons Sq Huddersfield. I cannot find him in 1901, but know he was in Plymouth in 1923 (address on inheritance from USA)  He could have travelled with his job, usually where catherdals were being restored.  If I knew his firm I might be able to track him

Hi
I don't know how much help this will be but, I'm in Australia, and there is an organization called "OHTA", or the Organ Historical Trust of Australia. They have been brilliant with the historical knowledge they have used to help me and I'm wondering if you have a similiar organization where you are...if you are not in the UK, perhaps your local version will have links to those in the UK. I know the one here does.
They are a font of information on the kind if thing you are looking for help with. I suppose you could even try our mob.  Contact John Maidment at

maidment@vicnet.net.au    or go to       http://www.ohta.org.au/

Tell him Helen McGrath sent you.

All the best & good hunting
