McCormicks at Bracca (Maires Estate) and Cartron's Glebe near Horseleap

I have general interest in Bracca, once part of the Maires estate, near Horseleap.  My relatives  Edward McCormick and wife Honora Dalton McCormick once lived there.  Their son Edward married Betty Molloy, and had John J. McCormick in 1844, who moved to the USA with them around 1850.

Betty Molloy came from Cartron's Glebe, next door to Bracca, but maybe in Offaly.  It was still standing in 1981.  I think Molloys still lived there in the early 1950s.

I have general interest in both places.  I will be in Ireland in late March.  I am wondering if my relatives still live there.

Hi Mxk1,  you will find that Cartron Glebe is listed under the parish of Kilcumreagh & I see listed in Griffiths Valuation there is a Laurence Molloy listed for there,  There are still McCormick/McCormac/McCocmack living in the Horseleap area.They maybe nothing to do with your family,but I know there was a Patrick McCormick/McCormac/McCormack (I have found  they spell it both ways) & his wife Margaret Healy lived just out sided of Horseleap going towards Moate I know they had two sons John born 1830 & Thomas born 1832. John married in 1858 & lived between Horseleap & Moate .When you visit the area I'm sure some one will help you with info ask at the Bar or Church in Horseleap , which you may already know is a very small place.Until the new bypass opened Horseleap was on the main Dublin to Galway road, now you must come off the main road to excess Horseleap.GOOD luck regards Nipy

Thank you very much for your detailed response!  The parish name is very helpful.  Lawrence Molloy was apparently my ggg-grandfather, if the 55yo family history book I am using as a reference is correct.  Both his dad and son were named Michael, unless the book messed up.  I hadnt checked Griffiths for him, but I will.  I also saw some evidence of multiple McCormick spellings, but I tend to see "ick" the most.

The Patrick McC you mention does not appear to be a direct ancestor of mine.  Mine were Edward McCormick, born around 1790; his son was Edward, born 1815 (died 1900 in New York state); and his son was John McCormick, born in Horseleap in 1844.

I will ask around the area when I come over in March.

Hello again Mxk1,it doesn't surprise me that Lawrence was following the pattern so common in Irish families son named after fathers father !!. If you are  into headstone hunting there is a RC cemetery next to the church in Horseleap also the church of Ireland in Horesleap.But there is a very old graveyard called Kill - it hasn't been used in many years(I would think 1930/40s)I looked around it in the 1970s it was very over grown & the headstones are almost unreadable,at that time I walked along the railway embankment to reach it,but I've been told recently that it has been tidied up & you can reach it through a farm.-This old graveyard is between Horseleap & Streamstown - to reach it, turn at the road by the Bar the entrance for Kill graveyard must be between the Church of Ireland & the railway bridge.Mxk1 March is not a kind month for old graveyard hunting!!! I'm sure you already know that the old name for Horseleap is Ardcurcher,regards Nipy
