Help with medal and army record
« on: Monday 05 January 09 18:33 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if someone has a list of soldiers who fought in the Boer War in 1901, did every soldier get a medal?  I have just found out that an ancestor of mine (who family legend said that he died in 1901) was in South Africa in 1901 and did not leave the army until 1910/11.

My plea is - is there anyone who can help with confirming that he was in South Africa and also what is the best way to obtain his army record.

His name was Patrick Doran and he was in the Royal Field Artillery.  His rank was either Bombardier or Sgt during the Boer War and I think he left the army as a Warrant Officer (but this again is family heresay and it has been wrong before!).

I'm afraid that for his records it is trip to Kew either by yourself, or someone on your behalf...

If you are still in Brummagen, it's not a bad day out, as long as you leave early enough!

The records are in WO97 for pre 1913 discharges, and are alphabetical by name.

His record will give place of birth on the front and any NOK and dependants on the back page...And if he was married whilst still with the colours, a marriage date  and place.
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Thanks for this information and for taking the trouble to reply.

Although originally a brummie I now live near Edinburgh so visiting Kew would be a bit more difficult.   If that is the only way though I will try to get down there perhaps later in the year.

If he was in the RFA during the Boer War, then he'll be on the medal roll.
Give me a while and I'll have a look for him.
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

Neil

Since I posted this I have found out that he was definately in South Africa between 3 Nov 1899 and 18 July 1901 and that he got a medal with 3 clasps.

Would the medal rolls tell me where about in SA he was and what battles he took part in?

His army number was either 32048 or 6501 and he was Sgt Patrick Doran with the Field Artillery.
