Hi,
This is a very long shot but what the heck!!
My Grandmother Frances Kane was born in 1894 in Liverpool and in the 1901 census was in Test House, part of the workhouse in West Derby with her mother and sister Elizabth born 1897. I am not sure when they left there as I am told the records were destroyed in a fire.
However, the family story goes that an a relative believed to be an Aunt came and took them to live with her in the Cleckheaton area. I hope when we get the 1911 census I will be able to find them. But until then does anyone know anyone who might have heard about the girls coming to live with a family member after 1901? Their father was Francis Robert Kane and no where to be found in 1901 but he was a mariner so could have been at sea or abandoned the family. Their mother was Elizabeth Kane, nee Rivington from the marriage certificate and Grandma's birth certificate. It is possible she either died in the workhouse or came to Yorkshire with them. My Grandma married Grandad John William Thornton at North Bierley in 1921, so she was in the general area. Her father was listed as deceased on her marriage cert, but I don't know where or when. The only remaining family member is an elderly Aunt who says Grandma never talked about her childhood except being brought to Yorkshire and she can't remember any more than that.
Perhaps someone's family might have talked about them, it's always worth asking.
Thanks for your time,
Kate.
