Oh, nice one JDS, :)

CJW,

The following you may already have or know about, but I was taking a look at the Preston Newspapers to see if his marriage to Sarah was mentioned or Lucy`s death.  I didn`t find anything, but I did find this snippet from 1st October, 1842.

THE FYLDE UNION  - Mr. Robert Thompson of Thistleton, for many years master of the Copp School, Great Eccleston, has been appointed clerk to the Board of Guardians and Superintendent Registrar for the Fylde Union.

Bet he signed a few BMD`s  ;D

Regards,
Mo

WONDERFUL :-* Thanks to you both. It is all new information. The eldest son John Thompson was born in Elswick,(I had his details) and I had William and Margaret(no birth or baptism) but not the Robert mentioned as a son.

Can't work out the other baptisms though for 1823.1825,1827 and 1830, as the record at the beginning of your message jds1949 has 1832 Margaret.

Margaret's age was 21 on her marriage in 1855!

Many thanks again to you both
A grateful Aussie

Hi,

Just as an aside I also spotted this in the 22nd November, 1851 edition of Marriages:

On Thursday last, at Singleton Church, by the Rev. L.C. Wood, John, eldest son of Mr. Robert Thompson, Yeoman, Thistleton, to Alice, eldest Daughter of Mr. Matthew Kirkham, farmer, Warbreck, near Blackpool.

Mo

Dear CJW

The Margaret born in 1823 was the first child recorded for Robert and Lucy - she presumably must have died in infancy and so, in 1832 Robert and Lucy named their last daughter Margaret. This was fairly common practice to name a new child after a recently died sibling.

Hope that clears it up

Thanks jds. On the LDS Family Search they have a death of Lucy Thompson Redman 1802, daughter of John Redman and Ellin Thompson! So maybe back to "the drawing board" or is the entry unreliable? My LucyThompson  supposedly died 1834 in Great Ecclestone.

Thanks Mo that marriage is for the eldest son John who moved to Birkenhead.
William Thompson the 2nd son followed his father in becoming a Poor Union Clerk, and when he died his estate came to his 2 nephews (John Cornall and Margaret Thompson's sons) in Australia. When their mother died (Margaret Thompson) they came to Australia and selected land. The property is called "Fleetwood" after the birthplace of James and Robert Cornall(the 2 nephews)
Thanks again
Cheers

Dear CJW

it looks like back to the drawing board with Lucy - St Michael's burial register does indeed have the following entry:
1802 August 16
Lucy daughter of John & Ellen Redman of Great Eccleston [Saddler] died August 15 aged 2.

Like you I cannot find any marriage between John Thompson and Lucy[?] - there isn't one at St Michael's nor any likely one on IGI or Vital Records, nor is there one listed in Boyd's list of mariages.

Sorry!

Dear CJW,

I've been doing a liittle more digging - I went back to Boyd's list and looked again and this time I did find something - two things in fact:

Marriage 1822 Robert Thompson married Lucy Tomson at Kirkham

Marriage 1835 Robert Thompson married Sarah Parkinson at Kirkham

That's the good news, the problem is that the Kirkham registers have not been published for the dates that you want - so no further details available.

So, Lucy Tomson must have died following the death of her last child, Margaret in 1832, and Robert then re-married in 1835.

Still no further in finding Lucy's family, but at least there was a marriage, even if we can't find the detail - unless there's someone out there who can get to the Lancashire Record Office in Preston which probably holds the original registers or a microfilm of same.

I presume that you already have the 1841 and 1851 census entries for Robert, Sarah and family at Greenhalgh with Thistleton? If not let me know and I'll post them.

Sorry that I missed the Lucy marriage the first time around - I was obviously having a "senior moment" - however we got there in the end,

regards,

Thanks a lot for your help jds I do appreciate it. I'll just have to keep plugging away. I have on the same piece of paper that Lucy died in 1834 in Great Ecclestone and that she had brothers and sisters William, John Mary Ann and James. My problem is that this paper also has her father and grandfather with the same names as Robert Thompson, her husband, namely fathers John and grandfathers William.

Lucy's father John born Thistleton( whichI think is Roberts father) and Robert's father John born Ellel.
It is all very confusing!!!

Margaret Thompson's father on the baptism is given as a schoolmaster of Thistleton, hence my wondering if the 2 Johns and 2 Williams are transposed.

Oh well this family searching wasn't meant to be easy ::)
Cheers
