Margaret Thompson Baptism Copp Church
« on: Monday 05 January 09 04:26 GMT (UK) »
Could someone please check a handwritten slip of paper I have states " Mary Thompson baptised 9th May 1832. Parents Robert Thompson Schoolmaster and Lucy Thompson" My research has Margaret's mother Sarah Hargreaves! Margaret married a John Cornall and had a daughter Sarah Elizabeth - possibly for her mother Sarah and her mother-in-law whose name was Elizabeth.

I cannot find a Lucy marrying a Robert Thompson.

Margaret's brother William Thompson born about 1828 should be baptised in the same place - I hope.

On the same handwritten note I have that Margaret's husband John and his twin brother Matthew were also  baptised at Copp Church in 1827. They were from Elswick!

Her's hoping someone has access to the Register of Copp Church. Is Copp near Great Ecclestone and Elswick?

Thanks

Hi CJW, your post caught my eye.

There doesn't appear to be a place named Copp but I am wondering if it is short for Coppull which is part of Chorley in Lancashire.  Elswick and Ecclestone are both in Lancashire too and Ecclestone isn't very far from Coppull.

Just a query...you called the lady Mary in the first line and then talked about Margaret...which is it?

There is a website for Coppull Parish church and there is also the online
parish clerk at www.lan-opc.org.uk
Another good lancashire site is lancashire bmd but that is from 1837 only.
Hope this helps.   ;D

Is Copp near Great Ecclestone and Elswick?

Hi,

The church would be St. Anne, Copp and is located half way between Great Eccleston and Elswick on Copp Lane.  If you go to www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Copp/StAnne.shtml
scroll down to Maps and then click on "this church marked on a Google Map"

By the way, I suspect that Lucy may have died and Robert had remarried a Sarah by the 1841 census.

Thanks to all . It is Margaret I was looking for. I cannot find a marriage for Robert Thompson and a Lucy but do have a marriage for Robert Thompson and Sarah Hargreaves in Colne.Maybe she was called Lucy!!

Cheers

Hi,

Personally I would not spread out as far as Colne to find the Marriage when all parties were born around Preston/Great Eccleston/Elswick way.   Especially as that Robert Thompson who married Sarah Hargreaves was a "weaver of Colne" ::) and couldn`t write his name as he made his mark on the marriage certificate.  Yours was a Schoolmaster, Clerk of the Union and Farmer.   It is far more likely that the records for the particular church have not been transcribed and therefore not available online.

Thanks Mo I'll see if I can find the elusive Lucy - according to family records! her maiden name was also Thompson born in G Ecclestone circa 1800 and her father was John Thompson a schoolmaster born in Thistleton. I discounted some of this as both husband and wife allegedly had fathers and grandfathers with the same names john and grandfather William. Also the census with wife Sarah.

Lancashire Parish Record Society Vol`143 Registers of St Michael's On Wyre and Copp Chapel has the following:
Copp Chapel Baptisms:
1832 May 9th Margaret d. Robert & Lucy Thompson of Great Eccleston - Schoolmaster
There's no record of a marriage for that couple at Copp Chapel, marriages there were very rare - it seems to have served as an annexe to St Michael's. I can't find a marriage for the couple at St Michael's either, however there are other baptism records from Copp Chapel which might be of interest:

1823 March 3 Margaret d. Robert & Lucy Thompson of Elswick, schoolmaster
1825 Feb 23 John s. Robert & Lucy Thompson of Elswick, schoolmaster
1827 July 29 William s. Robert & Lucy Thompson of Great Eccleston, schoolmaster
1830 Mar 10 Robert s. Robert & Lucy Thompson of Great Eccleston, schoolmaster

Hope that helps,

Just had another look at the Copp Chapel register - this might also interest you:
Baptisms:
1800 February 2 Lucy Thompson d. of John Redman of Great Eccleston by Helen his wife.

So she was Lucy Thompson Redman, Helen, her mother was the Thompson connection.

Marriages [St Michael's on Wyre]
1789 July 27 John Redman bachelor of this parish & Ellin [Ellen] Thompson of this parish spinster by licence.
