George Wardell Baptism Help
« on: Monday 05 January 09 00:54 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to locate the baptism of George Wardell.  His death certificate in 1860 gives his age as 54 which would put his birth sometime around 1806.  On the 1851 census he states he was born in Middlesex but no exact area was given.  His marriage entry in 1833 does not list any parents details and he was living in Lambeth, Surrey at that point.  Where would I even begin to look for his birth/baptism record and his parents?  I have hit the proverbial brick wall with this one.
Regards, Linda
Wardell - London
Sparrow - Somerset & London
Foster - Essex
Manning - Hertfordshire
Hendon - Wiltshire
Evans - Bedfordshire

Thanks Sue, I'll take any shot, long or not at this stage.

Thing is, without the Father's name on the marriage entry how am i going to be able to confirm which baptism is the right one in the end? AArrgghh. Sometimes I wonder why I started this family history malarky!!  This particular relative is driving me crazy but as he's a direct ancestor for my paternal line I feel I have to keep pushing at the brick wall to find out about him.

He ran a pub in Stockwell, Lambeth.  I wonder if there are any records anywhere from when he took over that might mention who his parents or siblings were, or maybe a Will that would give me a clue??

Do you have an actual copy of the marriage entry. I was wondering if the witnesses might give some clues. Sometimes if you were lucky they could be family members.

Have you also located him on the 1841 census, not that that would be much help really.  :'( :'(

I havent got a copy of the certificate but do have a copy of the register page and the man at Lambeth Archives who did the search said he looked at it for me and the witnesses were James Rutland and Thomas Steel although the entry i have the surname Steel is ambiguous.  It starts with an S but looks like it could be Sh--l??.  Groom was George Wardell and Bride was Mary Dongate.  The man also said that father's names were not put on the registers in those days so I cant be the only one hitting brick walls on this.  :(

I have him on the 1841 census but he's already married to Mary and living in Lambeth.  Only their children are living with them, the same for the 1851 census.  As he died in 1860 any Will he may have had will be held in York and not available online so going to send off for a search to see if that helps with any other family members.

The London Gazette of 20 August 1830 gives details of a partnership dissolved on 19 August 1830.  The partnership was of George and William Wardell, Victuallers of Great Surrey St.

A William Wardell, a Licensed Victualler who could be George's brother, is on the 1851 living in Stockwell.  William Wardell born c 1795 - looks like Middlesex Westminster.  Hope this helps.

Thank you Anne, I'll see what I can find about William and see if it gives me any clues for George.
