Glingerbank

Hi,

I thought I'd posted about this before but I can't find it when I search on rootschat! 

Anyway - my maternal Grandfather, Joseph Edward Beattie, spent some time in Glingerbank auxilliary hospital after WW1. This info only came to light after we discovered some sketches he'd drawn during his time there.

Having been able to find some of his army papers on Ancestry we were able to confirm that he spent some time there, we think he was suffering from "trench fever".

What we haven't been able to establish (with any certainty) is where Glingerbank was in relation to Carlisle (where he lived). We think it was in the Longtown area, but was it one of those VAD hospitals converted from a country estate / manor house, or was it a purpose-built unit?

Any ideas?

What a smashing picture!

I see what you mean about real or imagined.  I zoomed in and looked at the sign post - "Prosperity" and "Health"!  He was definitely thinking about the crossroads of life wasn't he?

I Googled but you've given it a good go.  I mostly found yourposts!

I did Google the web as opposed to images and found this page on the National Archives search.

I've only copied the immediate part I came to, fromm Google, so you're probably better going to the National Archives search.  There may be a photo - though later than your grandfather's time.  If you got in touch they might do you a photocopy of it?

Hi! I have only just logged onto this site and somehow came upon your message. Glingerbank is still there - though no longer lived in. Your grandfather's drawing is excellent, but not such a true representation. I can send you a copy of a photo of the house if you would like me to - I spent a lot of my childhood there, as my mum worked there.May happy memories (but never knew it when it was a nursing home)

The picture I had was something he sketched while he was convalescing there, so it may not have been representational of the existing building at all!

I'd be interested to see any pictures if you are able to upload them here, though!

Here is a picture of Glinger Bank just before the WWI.  I also have a picture of it just after the first war, showing a few improvements.
