Lookup Local Studies section at Barnsley Central Library
« on: Saturday 03 January 09 16:17 GMT (UK) »
Happy New Year folks.

Looking for obituary Michael Halpin died 30 December 1895 Hoyland.

I'd be very grateful if anyone who is thinking of making a visit to Barnsley Central Library would like to check the following newspapers held there on microfilm:

Barnsley Chronicle  copies held 1858-present

Barnsley Standard copies held 1892-

Barnsley Telegraph copies held 1852-

Barnsley Times/Barnsley Independent copies held 1855 - 1939

South Yorkshire Times copies held 1877-

Barnsley Sporting News copies held 1894-1903

It's not as time-consuming as it looks (I think) as the obit (if it exists) would have been published between 31 December 1895 and 15 January 1896 max.  I have the death certificate for this person (though age at death on it is wrong) and also know the exact location and date of burial.  Unfortunately, I know nothing but the bare bones of his life events.

The above are the only newspapers I have been able to locate which should have had circulation in Hoyland in 1895/6.

If anyone has nothing better to do one rainy afternoon...

Regards,
Eagleye

I think Hoyland also has the Sheffield Star that has Obits. Not sure what years this circulates Im sure someone will shout if this is not early enough.

Thanks Doodle but I've only listed the ones in Barnsley Library for the moment.  The Star is in Sheffield Library.

Should have made that clear in my posting.

  Hi there
I would have thought that obituarys are published in the weekly papers as i have found quite a few for my family , suprising what you can obtain from such articals , i know the Barnsley Chronical is weekly , so is the South Yorkshire times , can't help with the barnsley newspapers , as Doncaster library (my local) dose'nt have them but it does have the South Yorkshire Times , if no one can help before i will be visiting the library next week , i can take a look if you still require the info

Hi Gah,

That would be great if you could have a look at the South Yorkshire Times.  I don't think there will be many takers for this little job so every little helps.

By the way, he died a widower at number 40, Sebastopol, a street in Hoyland, and was an Irish catholic and an Iron Works labourer in case it helps.  Thankfully the surname is relatively uncommon.

Hi Doodle again,

Just seen your reply while posting the above.  Maybe you could check the others (whatever you've time for) and Gah the South Yorkshire Times so that it's one less for you?

I'll be thrilled if anyone finds an obit.......

Many thanks to you both,
Eagleye

Hi Doodle:

I was wondering if next time you are at the Barnsley library, if you would mind looking up a inquest write up for me?  I don;t think there would be a burial notice as Jim Crossland was just a coal miner but I have just received his death certificate and he died as a result of an accident in the mine. States a inquest was held.  If you have time to do this I will send you the rest of the information.

Thank you very much from a former Barnsley lass

Cheers

Anne
