Please help me decipher this writing
« on: Saturday 03 January 09 13:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Can anyone make out the surname of this person?
She registered the birth of an ancestor and was present at the birth.
I know that there were some ladies called Eliza in the family and I suspect her to be a married sister but I can't make it out.  It doesn't help that the "her mark" obscures the first letter.

Also the address looks like 12 Digges St - would you agree?

Many thanks,
Purpeller

Hi Purpeller,

Could it be Hayam? (Or Hayden?)

My first guess was Briggs Street but well ... it's just a guess  :P

Hi Tati
I was given a tip by an old lady I met whilst reviewing some parish registers. When you cant read the name properly put a piece of paper on top and try writing over the letters this way you get a feel for the flow of how it was written. In this case you would need tracing paper. I was a bit sceptical about it till I tried it but it does work

I think that I am seeing:

Eliza Lucy N(?)aysmith

I think that I would go with Briggs Street too.

What are you trying to find out?

Could the address have been a hospital? In which case the person may simply have been a member of staff ensuring that the birth was registered in order to comply with regulations that may have left them subject to a fine otherwise.

[modified: the word in superscript is probably just "her" as part of the "her" ... "mark" indication]
