James and Anne Bache - where can they be in 1871?
« on: Friday 02 January 09 22:50 GMT (UK) »
Hello all and Happy New Year

I've been tracing the family of James and Anne Bache who lived in Birmingham.  He was a glassblower and they married in 1843 in Handsworth.  I have managed to trace most of the family through the census returns and they seem to have lived in Ladywood/All Saints for most of their lives.  They do appear under various spellings (Bach, Back, etc even as Bates in 1861), but I've managed to dig them out.  All, that is, except for 1871.

By this time, the elder children were married and had left home, but the strange thing is I have found all the younger children apparently living with a Mr and Mrs Maler, but there is no sign of James and Ann.  I've tried all sorts of spellings, possible misreadings and mistranscriptions - anything I could think of, but to no avail.  I even tried searching with just the initials in case they had fallen foul of the law and ended up in prison or hospital, but while there were some JBs, none of them were glassblowers.  I guess there must be some reason why the younger children have been left with someone else, and the more I can't find them, the more curious I am getting!

So I'm stumped and wondered if anyone here had any suggestions or had come across a similar problem and had any tips.

Thanks very much

The family are called Neale rather than Maler. If you look at the census you can see it and then cross referenced with child Wilfred George.

However, I think that they are a separate family group too - it does say 'son' etc but they are at a different address.

best wishes

PS do you have the parents in later censuses or might they have died?

Hello Heywood

Thanks - I see what you mean about Neale.  I wondered about the Bache's being a separate family group, as it looks like they are next door - also Alfred is 17 and probably old enough to be left in charge.  Was a bit confused by Alfred being down as son rather than head - but I wonder if that means Mum and Dad were around, just not there on census day?

James and Ann do turn up again in 1881 and 1891 - he's now no longer a glass blower, but a watchman.  James lasted until 1897 while Ann went before him in 1895, so I'm quite curious to find out what they were up to in 1871, just to round off the picture!

I'd better keep searching!

Thanks for your help

Tessa

yes I thought that too .. they would put son etc if parents were still alive but I have looked and can't see anything. I wonder were they just missed off. Did they move house between 1871 and 1881 - that might be a clue. If they were still at same address, they might have just been missed off.

Just been having a look to see where they were in 61 and 81 - only the 61 address is a bit hard to read, so we got distracted trying to figure it out!

It looks like they were in ?Blues/Bleur Street West in 61 and by 81 they had moved to 1 George Street West which looking at an old map on line looks like it was only just along the street.  So it seems possible that they were still in the same place in 71.

Perhaps they were simply missed out, or were travelling back from visiting other family or something.  Just my luck!  :)

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts and help!

Best wishes

Tessa

Hello!  How brilliant!  James Bache was my great great great grandad, and I'm descended from his daughter Louisa.

It would be great to compare notes - I've been looking at the family through the census years and have become quite attached to them!  They seem to have moved to Manchester for a little while just after your great grandad was born before coming back to Birmingham.

Goodness only knows what sort of cousins how many times removed we are, but lovely to meet you online!  :)

Hi Sylvia

There's an Amelia, but no Amy, and Anne's maiden name was Probin.

Sorry!
