Hello all and Happy New Year
I've been tracing the family of James and Anne Bache who lived in Birmingham. He was a glassblower and they married in 1843 in Handsworth. I have managed to trace most of the family through the census returns and they seem to have lived in Ladywood/All Saints for most of their lives. They do appear under various spellings (Bach, Back, etc even as Bates in 1861), but I've managed to dig them out. All, that is, except for 1871.
By this time, the elder children were married and had left home, but the strange thing is I have found all the younger children apparently living with a Mr and Mrs Maler, but there is no sign of James and Ann. I've tried all sorts of spellings, possible misreadings and mistranscriptions - anything I could think of, but to no avail. I even tried searching with just the initials in case they had fallen foul of the law and ended up in prison or hospital, but while there were some JBs, none of them were glassblowers. I guess there must be some reason why the younger children have been left with someone else, and the more I can't find them, the more curious I am getting!
So I'm stumped and wondered if anyone here had any suggestions or had come across a similar problem and had any tips.
Thanks very much
