How to find a Shop in Bray 1930's
« on: Friday 02 January 09 22:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Im trying to find records of a Shoemakers in Bray. It was owned/ran by a Samuel MACK and a John FARRELL and we were told it was on Main St and called Central Boot and Leather Store. This may not be exact as the info was from a very old relative. Although all his other info was perfect.

Any guidance as to where Id start would be great.
Thanks
Mack

found a reference to the Central Boot Stores in Cork in Kelly's Directory of Leather Trades or 1915 at this page :

http://www.failteromhat.com/kelly1915.htm

the address is 20-23 Grand Parade, Cork -  Boot & Shoe Makers, Warehouses & Dealers

could this be part of a group of shops ?

also listed is a Michael  Connor, 39 Main St,  Bray  - dont know if thats connected but the owners could have changed by the 1930s..

EDIT - found an extract from Thoms Directory of 1931 for Bray Town at this link : http://www.from-ireland.net/wick/directs/bray1931.htm

looking at Thoms Directory 1937, for Bray - I can't find MACK or FARRELL on Main Street .. there are

88 P Waldron, bootmaker
95 J Reid ,boots and shoes
114 O'Carroll Gerrard J, boot and clothing merchant

in 1922 there's

39b Connor john, bootmaker
88 Waldron Wm
95 Miss Reid
108 Mooney Peter, clothier & boots
114 O'Carroll Gerrard J

maybe someone could look up an in-between Thoms - say 1930 - for you

Thanks for such a quick reply. Im going to try and see if any of those listed were related in any way and owned the shop etc. Im not 100% sure it was in Bray so its a fairly wide scope I have to cover. But all guidance is much appreciated.  :)
